Both Mercedes F1 Cars Go Off At The End Of Qualifying, Grab 1-2 Anyway-July 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:40

Mercedes Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg timed their dual wipe-out just right during this morning’s qualifying session for the Austrian Grand Prix. Both drivers went off at the end of the third and final qualifying session after driving to P1 and P2 starting positions, respectively.

Lewis Hamilton laid down a flying pole position lap of 1:08.455, a mere two tenths ahead of his teammate Nico Rosberg. After the checkered flag was thrown, however, Hamilton spun off at turn 1, throwing away his final qualifying lap. Could Rosberg lay down a final flying lap and claim pole as a result?

Nope! Rosberg wiped out on his final lap, going even farther into the gravel outside Turn 9. He looked pretty disappointed in himself on the long walk back, even declining a ride from the medical car on the way.

Per , this gives Lewis Hamilton his 45th pole position, tying him with Sebastian Vettel for the third most number of pole positions behind Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna.

Fortunately for Disappointed Rosberg, the Mercedes cars are still the fastest, with only one other time in the 1:08s from Sebastian Vettel (1:08.810).

Full qualifying results can be found .

: These two offs happened so close to each other that I originally reported them as being at the same corner. They were not, and the post has been updated to reflect this. Also, Rosberg plowed straight off and wasn’t a spin, either, so the post has been updated to reflect that as well.
