Convertibles. They’re , especially the sort of luxury barge drop tops that used to top everyone’s lottery wish list. We used to dream, people. What happened? It seems like Genesis wants an answer to that question too, as the brand has reportedly set about turning last year’s concept into a production flagship.

The rumor comes by way of Automotive News, which learned from the chairman of the the Genesis National Dealer Advisory Council that Luc Donckerwolke, the marque’s chief creative officer, said the X Convertible is headed for showrooms at a recent dealer meeting. And it won’t be as pedestrian as the E-Class Cabriolet, or possibly even the . Genesis appears to be setting its sights even higher, :

“When [Donckerwolke] said that at the dealer meeting — to say it in front of a couple of hundred Genesis dealers — that’s a pretty good sign,” [GNDA Council Chairman Peter] Lanzavecchia said.

A performance GT coupe is high on the wish list for Genesis dealers, according to Lanzavecchia, adding that was rumored even before Donckerwolke addressed dealers about its planned arrival.

“I don’t know if it’s going to be over $200,000 or $300,000, but I guarantee we’re going see a lot of Bentley Continental convertible trade-ins on that when it comes to our showrooms,” he said.

“It would be a true halo flagship for the brand,” he said. “And although sales volume might be extremely limited, I think production of that convertible would help put an exclamation point at the end of the sentence saying Genesis is a full real luxury brand.”

Of course it’s hard to say whether the $200,000-to-$300,000 estimate, or the Bentley target, is really what Doncerwolke and company have in mind. I’m sure it’s what Genesis dealers really hope he does, and frankly who can blame them? The , as well as the , are all show stoppers. You don’t introduce a car that looks that perfect and not sell it, .

Once again, props to the Hyundai Group for building cars that every other manufacturer of its magnitude is too afraid to. They don’t seem to shoot down good ideas very often these days. Taking the Veloster N powertrain and was genius. The has proven a design masterstroke — even if I have some nitpicky issues with it — and not the S-Class, nor the A8, nor the 7 Series has a bead of the presence dripping from the . (Especially not the 7 Series.) More automakers need to shoot for the moon. This industry is more fun when they do.

Jalopnik has reached out to Genesis for confirmation of the X Convertible’s production status and will update this story with anything we should learn.

For $2,000, this diesel Roadmaster is a real loco-motive
Planes, Trains and Automobiles was hands down a great flick. Contrastingly, today's 6.2 Diesel-converted Roadmaster is kind of plain, sounds like a train, and upon close examination, appears to be an automobile. But is its price all that and a bag of popcorn? Baby got back - Squareback that is...

For $1,200, get fired up over this Nissan Van
It's not often that we have a non-runner here on , but today's Nissan Van is a rare survivor of the crusher apocalypse so even though currently immobile, it's still hot stuff. You know how to get a Kleenex® to dance? Blow a little boogie in it. Yesterday's audacious had...

Just let me know, if you wanna' go, to that shack outside La Grange. Today's '34 Ford limousine is fine, if you've got the time, and the six figures to get yourself in. A hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm. Yesterday's proved so popular that it might just have been able to...

For $46,900, is plastic fantastic?
Most of us likely owned an affordable plastic Ferrari when we were kids - made by either Revell or Airfix. Today's 308 GTB is plastic, and there's no assembly required. But is its price a model of value? By the early 1980s, emission and fuel economy standards had diminished the...

For $6,999, this 740i makes you do all the work
Remember back when the big BMWs didn't look like something Chris Bangle shat out? Well, not only is today's 740i not a bowl circler, it's also not an automatic. But does its price mean you don't give a crap? Despite a proclivity for spontaneous combustion that implied a sense of...

For $26,500, more Caballista!
Everybody knows Don't Fear the Reaper has got to have more cow bell, but do you think today's limited edition custom Corvette sound better as the Caballista? Les Dunham was a visionary. Few before him had ever even considered putting Eldorado baroque on the truncated platform of the Corvette, and...
