2015 Ford F-150: What We Know
2015 Ford F-150: What We Know-December 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:13:29

The is one of Truck Yeah!'s most anticipated debut scheduled for the Detroit Auto Show next week. Here's everything we know about it before the cover finally comes off on January 13.

Ford's F-Series has been the in America for 32 different years since it's introduction. Frustratingly, Ford doesn't usually discriminate between the F-150, 250, and 350 to give us that statistic but it's still safe to call the F-150 a damn popular pickup. That gives Ford the challenge of retaining a large existing fanbase while innovating past competitors and bringing in a new crop of customers.

With the introduction of GM's redesigned full-sized pickups and the last year before the 2015 Ford…

What We Know

Specifically, on the morning of January 13th.

There's been much discussion over Ford's partnership with to build a lighter F-150. While there will obviously be fluctuation in weight across the different cabs, engines, and trim levels, it seems that a diet of about "700 pounds" off the outgoing model is the goal.

Bloomberg reports that military-grade aluminum is being prepared for the 2015 Ford F-150 display at

There will be a range of engines, with talk of a 5.0 V8, 3.5 V6 EcoBoost, 3.0 naturally aspirated and even a circulating.

spotted what they're sure was a 2015 F-150 prototype leaving GM's facility in Milford, Michigan back in September. I doubt they were lost, and it's been known for some time that Ford and GM are moving toward of some key components.

We almost definitely won't see it at Detroit, but the Raptor has been a huge hit and a halo vehicle for the truck brands. This is just plain common sense.

What We Think We Know

As Jason showed us almost a year ago, the retained all the F-150's styling cues with influence from more . Apparently Ford Design Head J Mays' keyword here is "intelligent." Dynamic spoilers that adjust with speed and vehicle temperature to maximize aerodynamics were part of that concept design, and even the wheels had flaps to cut down on drag — though it isn't clear if those make the final cut.

If you woke up from a bender in Ford's press event this morning, you'd have seen a large scaffold…

speculated that a 10-speed transmission jointly developed by Ford and GM could be part of the 2015 F-150's efficiency-improving efforts, and chatter seems to agree.

In December of 2012, the reported Ford would spend some $75 million increasing capacity to supply transmissions for F-Series and Ranger pickups as part of a larger campaign to amplify production.

What We Have No Idea About

When the reported that Ford and Toyota were abandoning collaboration on a hybrid powertrain last summer, they went on to say that Ford would independently build a rear-wheel drive hybrid setup for use in the 2015 F-150. Not too many people seem to be agreeing, but it's worth keeping an eye open for.

There's no one saying this is happening, but the fun thing to speculate now when anyone mentions a new Ford is that it'll get the three-banger.

Going through TSA checkpoints when flying is always a chore. You have to chug your booze, take off…

A Ford Raptor Is Less Fun In Gridlock
A Ford Raptor Is Less Fun In Gridlock
I'm wedged in the back seat of a Raptor SuperCab with Zac and a stack of suitcases as fearless leader Hardigree battles Detroit traffic. Raphael's relaxing in heated-seat comfort up front; I don't think he can even feel my pointy knees jabbing into the back of the truck's over-bolstered front...

Someone Wants To Bring Rear Louvered Spoilers To Future Pickups
Hidden between a supply closet and the toilets at AISIN's stand was a 1:10th-ish scale model of an anonymous pickup with a slanted louver/spoiler setup looking like an Escalade EXT that wandered onto the set of Death Race. AISIN is not some goofy garage outfit struggling to get a booth...

Power Wagon Turned Planter
Power Wagon Turned Planter
Time for your daily dose of derelict trucks rusting in their final resting place. This dead Dodge was spotted near Waverly, Ohio in 2006. That badass winch caught my attention right away, and the front bumper looks big enough to park a rocking chair on and enjoy a view of...

Why The 2015 Ford F-150 Is Better For The Environment Than The Prius
Why The 2015 Ford F-150 Is Better For The Environment Than The Prius
If you look at fuel economy in miles-per-gallon, the statement above sounds insane. Look at it in gallons-per-mile, and the societal benefit of improving a guzzler's efficiency outweighs improving a fuel sipper. That means the could do more to reduce fuel consumption than the Prius. This was pointed out to...

Recognize The F-150's Forefather
Time for your daily dose of derelict trucks rusting in their final resting place. With the release of the 2015 Ford F-150 finally upon us, it felt appropriate to recognize its (great?) granddad on today's Rust In Peace. This would have been one of the very first F-Series trucks, built...

Tesla's VP Laughed At Me When I Asked About Their Pickup Truck
Tesla's VP of Worldwide Sales and Service Jerome Guillen was kind enough to take questions after the least eventful press conference I've seen at the Detroit Auto Show, but he "does not know where rumors came from" about a utility or pickup from his company. Those came from Elon Musk,...
