2022 VW Arteon Gets the Golf R's 300-HP Engine
2022 VW Arteon Gets the Golf R's 300-HP Engine-July 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:09:23

I gotta admit, this actually looks good.

VW has updated the Arteon for 2022. While you may be like “Yea? And? What’s your point?” there’s news here. Big news. News that might make you consider the Arteon if you’re in the market for a new car: There’s a new engine. The Arteon now makes as much power as a Porsche 718 Boxster.

The has been on sale since 2019 as sort of a bigger, more luxurious, more stylish brother to the Passat. The only engine choice ever offered (at least here in the U.S.) was a 2.0-liter I4 with 268 horsepower. While that’s plenty of power for what amounts to a premium family sedan, it was mid-pack compared to competitors, especially in the premium segment that VW wanted it to compete in. VW has solved this for 2022.

The 2022 Arteon has been updated across the board. All models now get R-Line trim, and they all get the same 2.0-liter EA888 turbocharged I4 from the . While that engine makes 315 horsepower in the Golf R, it’s been slightly detuned in the Arteon to “just” 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This gets paired to a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission and your choice of front- or all-wheel drive. That AWD happens to be the same Haldex system used in the last-gen Golf R. Think of it as sort of a grown-up Golf R without the hoonish image, and with more room for your family and stuff.

All this will cost you though. Pricing has never been one of the Arteon’s strong points. Including a $1,195 destination charge, the Arteon SE R-Line starts at $41,945. A loaded-out Arteon SEL Premium R-Line is an Audi-like $51,140. While VW has positioned the Arteon as a premium offering, asking more than $50,000 for it may be too much for some buyers. Still. Golf R power in a sleek sedan. That’s not bad.

For $18,900, You Could Add This 1991 BMW M5 To Your Family
Today’s E34 M5 represents the last edition to date to carry a six, and hence the last to trace its lineage directly back to the M1 super car. We’ll have to see if this low-mileage example’s price makes it worth climbing that family tree. Take me out to that ball...

The Best Thing About The 2016 Chevrolet Volt Is How Futuristic It Doesn't Feel
When the press met the redesigned , test pilots came back with pretty much unanimously good first-impressions. I finally got the chance to live with the car for a few days, and it’s not some novelty—it’s simply a solid little people-mover. (: GM offered to lend me a Volt in...

For $1,850, This 1987 Nissan Maxima Could Take You To The Max…er, ima
Today’s Maxima comes from before Nissan started calling them the ‘Four Door Sports Car.’ That doesn’t mean this creampuff doesn’t have appeal, but at its asking price would you recommend peeling off the Benjamins? If you were looking for a real four door sports car you could hardly do better...

For $9,950, Could This 1996 Jeep Cherokee Have You Crossing Over?
Do you find today’s crop of crossovers to be a little too frou-frou for your tastes? Well, step right up and into today’s Cherokee Sport because it’s not a crossover, it’s an old school all-roader. The only thing standing in its way, might be its price. Whoa, yesterday’s proved to...

For $27,900, This 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 Might Be The RestoMod For The Rest Of Us
Today’s Ford Gal… I mean, Mercury Maurad.. oh hell, this resto-ride... could be the best of both worlds, unless its price is the worst in the world. Could you imagine having the world’s nicest shovel? You know, it gleams in the sun, lacks even the smallest of scratches and has...

For $26,543, You Could Drive Ken Griffey Jr’s 2000 Mercedes Benz RENNtech CLK 60
Today’s RENNtech CLK 60 was supposedly once owned by one of baseball’s heavy hitters. Let’s see if that provenance, and its tuner mods, will make its price a home run hit. If you listen to any of the current political discourse in America today (and my condolences if you do),...
