A Majority Of Mazda Miata Buyers Still Want A Manual Transmission-December 2024

It seems like every day you hear news that the manual is dying. Nobody is buying a manual transmission, especially . The take rate on many manual-optional cars is dwindling. But there are a few bright spots in the manual transmission world. The one shining the brightest right now is found in Mazda’s lovely Miata.

Based on the period of sales from July 2018 until April 2019, that only one in four soft-top Miata buyers opted for an automatic transmission. Admittedly Miata RF buyers, seeking a more Grand Touring experience, were more likely to purchase an automatic, but still (barely) in the minority at 48%.

Personally, I don’t see the appeal of an automatic Miata, as much of the joy is found in the car’s near-perfect notchy gear change. Automatics make a lot of sense for high torque highway haulers, but the Miata’s 181 horsepower engine demands to be flogged up to high revs to extract as much zoom zoom as possible.

It’s unlikely we’ll be “saving the manuals” in mid-sized commuter sedans any time soon, but it’s good to know that the three-pedal crew is still alive and well in two-seat roadster land.

For $8,000, Does AMG Make This MB OMG?
The seller of today's AMG-powered W124 says it's unfit for soccer mom duty until Danica Patrick starts popping them out. Misogynistic rabble aside, its C36 drivetrain should make this wagon entertaining, but will you entertain its price? Speaking of women and German cars, due to its fun in the sun...

If home invader Goldilocks had decided to also steal one of the Bears rides, she might have found Mamma Bear's minivan to have too many wheels, and Papa's Harley to have too few. If da' Bears also owned today's Willys home-built, she might have found it just right. Will you...

For $15,900, Make Tracks
The great thing about a WRC rally-bred car is its all terrain-ability- the only thing able to slow it down being deep powder. Today's Subie WRX has even that surface beat, but will you find its price to be a big snow job? Okay, I promise, no more German cars...

Doesn't Every Truck Need A Flamethrower?
Stand and fight, or run away? That's not a question most of us face each day, but big boy toymaker VWerks wants to make sure you'll have what you need to choose the former. Namely, a flame-throwing Dodge pickup and a .50-caliber-topped 1-ton Jeep. I got to drive both of...

Jeep J12 Concept: First Drive
Ask any young boy to name their coolest car, they'll likely pick a Jeep or a truck. There's just something about both that hit all the right Cro-Magnon hot spots in any pre-pubescent boy's mind. But merge them together? Well, then you get possibly the greatest combination of utilitarianism and...

For $6,500, Is This The M3 For Thee?
While venerated, BMW's E30 M3 did lack certain features possessed by its later, and better performing, brethren. Today's E36 for example offers both a drop top and an. . . automatic transmission. Will that second item guarantee its price needs to down along with the top? Unsurprisingly, yesterday's toppled under...
