A Simple Fairing Test For A Space Rocket Is Eerily Gorgeous
A Simple Fairing Test For A Space Rocket Is Eerily Gorgeous-May 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:14:30

SpaceX, the space vehicle company founded by Elon Musk, aka the CEO of Tesla, is constantly testing components for its space rockets. The piece undergoing testing here looks small, but it's actually big enough to fit a school bus inside, and yet somehow its still beautiful.

The fairing itself is meant to protect satellites from the intense effects of a launch, and accordingly must be extremely strong. The test here is meant to ensure that the fairing separates smoothly upon exiting the atmosphere.

Conducted in the largest vacuum chamber in the world at NASA's Glenn Brook Research Center – Plum Brook Station, this slow-motion video of the test shows what is supposed to happen when the rocket itself is travelling nearly ten times the speed of sound.
