Back in the late 1960s, Toyota put together one of the most beautiful motor vehicles veer penned by human hands. It was low, sleek, with its long hood hiding a Yamaha-developed two-liter inline-six. But what’s a gorgeous performance car without a racing program? What’s a racing team in the late ‘60s without Carroll Shelby? Toyota, it seems, thought all these questions out, and those pieces all came together for a Toyota-backed, Shelby-developed 2000GT race team.

Toyota gave Shelby three 2000GTs to run in the 1968 SCCA season, two of which placed third and fourth place for the season behind a pair of Porsche 911s. Toyota ended the program after that first year, but the cars lived on — including this one, the first ever 2000GT produced, which just at auction.

The previous record for Most Expensive Japanese Car Ever Sold was a very different Toyota — the , which was auctioned at Barrett-Jackson for charity. With this 2000GT only pulling a mere $435,000 more, it almost looks like a deal. The Supra may have an incredible exhaust note, but does it have racing heritage and the classic Shelby colors?

Usually, when cars go for absurd amounts of money, about high prices making things inaccessible to most enthusiasts. But if any car is truly worth $2.535 million, it’s likely this bad boy with its laundry list of accomplishments: first-ever 2000GT, first Toyota to compete in SCCA, first deal between Carroll Shelby and a Japanese automaker. Add all that history to one of the best-looking cars ever formed from metal, and the price starts to seem a bit more reasonable. It may only be a matter of time until another Japanese car eclipses this one in sale price, but for now its place in the record books is rightly earned.

At $32,000, Is This 007-Edition 2003 Ford Thunderbird Licensed To Chill?
James Bond and cool cars go together like bar brawls and black eyes. Today’s T-Bird honors one of Bond’s lesser film outings and wasn’t even driven by the super spy in the flick. It’s still relatively rare and seems to be priced accordingly. Insurers will often total a vehicle...

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler Lets You Live Your American Dream
When I , I had a few preconceptions about this fair country. First, I assumed high schoolers all wore the uniforms of their respective pastimes everywhere they went (like cheerleading or playing ball). Secondly, I thought with the roof off. Now, after driving ‘round in a Wrangler with the...

At $12,500, Might You Be Open To This 1984 BMW 320i Baur Convertible?
Today’s 320i was given its open-air top by Karosserie Baur, the same coachbuilder responsible for building BMW’s legendary M1. Let’s see if this car’s price makes it almost as memorable. When it comes to muscle trucks—pickups with performance—it seems that off-road is where it’s at. The Ford Raptor, Ram...

The Nissan Leaf Waited For EVs To Be Popular Just To Go Out Like This
Poor Nissan Leaf. Being first never brought it success. Being cheap with decent range at a time when very few other electric cars are, also, hasn’t paid off. EVs have crossed over into the sort of mundane conversation you have with extended family over Thanksgiving dinner, and still nobody...

I'm Replacing My Hyundai Coupe With Something More Up To Date! What Car Should I Buy?
Stan has really enjoyed his 2010 Hyundai Genesis coupe, but it’s time for an upgrade and he wants two more doors, all-wheel-drive, and upgraded tech. However, he doesn’t want to give up the fun and performance of the V6 power and he certainly doesn’t want a boring color. What...
