Alpine Has Successfully Weaponized Nostalgia Again-April 2024

Do you remember those Flash games the cool kids used to play in computer lab with the car paint and wheel selector? The car models were always badly rendered, and the wheels looked worse than used tuna can lids.

Somehow, you could take those few pixels and still design something that would theoretically “… after you put about 15 grand in it — or more — if we have to…overnight parts from Japan.”

Which is to say, some kids could still make rad designs on those configurators. Well, Alpine invites you to relive those days with this, the Atelier Alpine :

Of course, the French automaker is hosting this car configurator for the benefit of all who appreciate waiting for paint and wheel selections to buffer, but mostly the site is an interface for prospective owners to customize their coupes.

There are 26 colors in all, and each will be limited to 110 roadgoing models. The number may seem arbitrary at first, but it’s a nod to the car’s model name, A110. Each of the cars will be handmade and the custom finishes reformulated in Alpine’s .

Future owners can choose custom wheels from a selection of three finishes and three designs, all of which are 18 inches. Brake calipers can also be custom-painted, but there are only four color choices for these. The microsite does not provide a final cost for the customizations, but you can imagine it carries a modest premium over the car’s base price of about $70,000 USD.

What you get in return is a customized A110 and a commemorating your bad choices. Look, I’m not creative enough to make a choice on the configurator at all and would happily take an A110 in any color.

Jalopnik’s love for the A110 is no secret. The French sports car builds on the tried and true combination of low weight, moderate output and excellent balance. Even if we are unlikely to ever see the berlinette in North America, we can still play with the configurator and commiserate with Alpine, clearly living in the past and making the best of it.

The 2021 Hyundai Veloster N's Automatic Transmission Comes With An Overboosting Party Trick
The 2021 Hyundai Veloster N's Automatic Transmission Comes With An Overboosting Party Trick
Don’t worry, you’re still going to be able to buy a 2021 Hyundai Veloster N with a stick. But now you can now also spec a dual-clutch auto with “N Grin Shift” which, apparently, lets you bump the turbo boost momentarily for a little surge of speed. Sounds fun....

You Can Still Love Manual Transmissions No Matter What The Corporate Stooges Say
You Can Still Love Manual Transmissions No Matter What The Corporate Stooges Say
The love of manual transmissions among automotive journalists has become something of a cliché. I absolutely understand that. That cliché has likely become more intense as the number of manual cars available for sale dwindles every year, becoming more and more niche. Recently, I’ve noticed a strain of criticism...

GM May Deploy Emergency Michiganders To Missouri Truck Plant
General Motors is considering delving into its strategic Mitten Reserve as its critical Missouri truck plant faces absenteeism in the face of coronavirus. All that and more in for Tuesday, July 29, 2020. This is an interesting one. GM workers in its Wentzville, Missouri plant are not showing up...

The 2021 Honda Odyssey Looks Downright Fast
The 2021 Honda Odyssey is getting a facelift, which includes a snout that looks a lot like what’s on today’s Civic. I think the minivan actually wears it better. The vehicle’s not going to be swifter than the Odyseey we know and love now, it’s still running the same...

Autonomous Cars Were Predicted In A Wizard of Oz Book
I don’t think we’ve ever really covered much about L. Frank Baum’s famous stories about the land Oz here before, mostly because the stories (and the famous movie) are pretty thin on cars. But that’s not to say there aren’t any things like cars. In fact, in one of...

The Big Automaker Coronavirus Losses Are Here
Volkswagen posted a big loss, as did Renault. Also someone has a dumb idea about GM’s name. That and more in for July 30, 2020. That is bad but VW also said it saw some hopeful signs for the second half of 2020. VW is also in the midst...
