At $18,900, Might This 2001 Saab 9-3 Viggen Prove A Speedy Sale?-February 2024

Nice Price or No Dice 2001 Saab 9-3 Viggen

The seller of today’s Saab 9-3 Viggen says that, in their opinion, it’s the best in the country. Let’s see what such a premier pedestal placement should realistically be worth.

Owing to its small size, you might not think it, but the we looked at yesterday was packed with innovative engineering. Much of that made its way to the company’s other lines, thus making the 190 an iconic root model. One element of our car that few of you found funky fresh was its $8,750 price tag. With nearly 400K on the clock, that was seen as an overreach, ending the day with an 85 percent No Dice loss.

In the 1950s, American car makers began emulating design elements of jet aircraft, then a new and exceedingly exciting thing. Fins and nose cones and chrome trim swooshing down flanks ruled the day in the latter half of the decade, only fading from fashion by the mid-’60s when the “Jet Age” segued into the “Space Age.”

The Swedish automaker Saab arose during this same period, and uniquely, the car builder was an offshoot of an . Its first automotive products eschewed the faux aircraft styling elements that the Americans preferred, choosing instead to make the cars aerodynamically efficient using actual learnings from the aircraft side of the house. Thus, the brand’s “Born from Jets” tagline earned its origin.

There’s lots more history in the Saab story, some of it good and a good bit that’s frustratingly sad. We won’t go into all that in the confines of today’s discussion but will go so far as to acknowledge that the we are considering is a special high-performance edition named after the Saab 37 single-seat fighter jet, giving it even more props toward the model’s aircraft ancestry.

According to the ad, this Viggen is one of just 2,932 built between 1999 and 2002. Per specs, this is further one of just 207 Steel Gray convertibles sold in the U.S. in 2001. The metallic paint is paired with a black canvas top featuring a glass rear window and a charcoal interior with leather seating surfaces and Viggen logos embossed on the backrests of all four seats. Those back seats can be rendered inaccessible by the placement of the factory wind-blocker over the space, thus turning the car into a two-seat sportster with a large screened-in porch for extra luggage.

From the factory, the Viggen managed a healthy 230 horsepower from its 2.3-liter 16-valve four. A fat Mitsubishi turbocharger feeding an intercooled intake builds that corral. This car might have some additional afterburner built in as the seller claims a number of “tasteful upgrades” have been made. Those include a Stage 3 ECU tune, a larger-capacity intercooler, and a fatter downpipe, all for getting more of the good stuff in the cylinders and packing a bigger punch. The work is said to have been done professionally and within just the last 5,000 miles.

Helping keep the 9-3 dancing and not doing the Swedish Swerve is what is described as a Viggen “Rescue Kit” comprising strut and underbody stabilizers and embiggened anti-sway bars. The ad says the car runs on fresh Continental meats and has had proper maintenance its entire life. The convertible top works, as evidenced by the pictures, and has new hydraulics to ensure it keeps doing so. It also comes with a clean title and the boast of it being a “literal rocket ship” when called upon. And yes, the ignition key is between the seats, making it a proper Saab, even if there’s a lot of Opel under the skirts.

The seller says this Viggen is one of the best in the country and claims to be in no hurry to be rid of it. We’ll have to judge if an $18,900 price tag is part of that reluctance. What do you say? Is this supposedly best Viggen worth that kind of cash? Or does that price make this one Thunderbolt that’s shockingly expensive?

You decide!

Jalopnik Reviews: 2006 BMW M Roadster, Part 3
Because it's a taut, brilliantly executed roadster in the tradition of great British roadsters — well, not exactly in their tradition. Think of the romanticized, open-top road car of your dreams, not the one whose parts fly off when it gets breezy. Also because you're also well-heeled enough, or willing...

You already have an H1 and an H2 and want to complete the set. You want a car that "feels safe." You're genuinely interested in off-roading. You want an SUV that actually looks like a truck instead of some warmed-over tall wagon. It's slow as molasses, fuel economy is terrible,...

Jalopnik Reviews: 2006 Hummer H3, Part 2
The H3 looks like a Tonka toy, in a good way. It also looks exactly like how you'd expect a Hummer to look, although other than styling cues the appearance isn't close to the H1 or H2. So the aggressive, tough look of the H3 is a success. It only...

Maybe you've seen the Hummer TV ad where a two kids cut in line to a playground slide. The victim's attractive mother says, "I'm sorry, Jake was next." To which the other mother replies, "Yeah, well, we're next now." Then, inspired by an ad on a city bus passing by...

Jalopnik Reviews: 2007 Saturn Sky, Part 3
It's got those cool dent-resistant plastic hydroformed sheetmetal body panels. Really though, the Sky looks boss, especially for a car priced in the mid-20's. It gives us hope for the American auto industry that they can still make fun cars. The roof is annoying and trunk is pretty useless, and...

Jalopnik Reviews: 2006 BMW M Roadster, Part 2
The M Roadster shares its distinctive, shark-like front portion and polarizing "flame surfacing" with BMW's standard Z4 models. The M version's wider stance and copious rubber, however, serve to de-emphasize all those flaming surfaces. Such mo-sports muscularity resolves the model's inherent design tensions in the same way The Hulk's green...
