At Least Porsche Had Its Best Sales Year Ever In 2018-January 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:09:45

Does the ongoing SUV apocalypse have you down? Here’s some good news: People are still buying fun cars, even if they’re expensive and in some cases way more normal than they used to be. , for example, had its best sales year ever in 2018. I’ll take that news over the opposite.

Porsche reported that it delivered 256,255 vehicles worldwide in 2018, a 4 percent increase year-over-year. At a time when new car sales are plateauing or falling off for some brands, it’s good news for the enthusiast-centric German brands.

Some takeaways from the sales data released by the company:

The Macan, naturally, is the biggest seller worldwide, and Porsche moved about 86,000 of them. The Cayenne came a close-ish second at 71,458 cars, which was actually up from 2017.

China remains the biggest market and sales were up 12 percent year-over-year there despite an overall slowdown. The 911 is still holding its own, with 35,000 examples sold—a 10 percent year-over-year increase. And isn’t even on dealer lots yet.The Panamera showed strong growth to rise to 38,443 cars sold, which ain’t bad considering the overall decline of sedans everywhere. The 718 Boxster and Cayman had a so-so year, with sales actually down slightly in 2018 at 24,750 for both models. (Porsche didn’t give a breakdown of those models, sadly.)

The last one bums me out a bit, as the 718s are exceptionally great sports cars and in some ways even more fun to drive than the 911, . But the global sports car market is slowing down, and I have a largely anecdotally-based theory that audiences haven’t really warmed up to the turbo four-cylinder engines in those cars. Buy more 718s, you jokers!

Anyway, I’m glad to hear this not because I’m some Porsche stan, but because all of Porsche’s current cars are generally excellent, well-built and a lot of fun to drive. It’s good to see an enthusiast brand do well.

This year should be interesting too, with the Cayenne and Macan having recently received updates, an all-new 992 911 for sale and the upcoming on the horizon. Let’s hope the Porsche that runs on electricity will be worthy of the badge, and not some warmed-over Audi.

This Personality-Based Car Matching Test Will Leave You Insulted And Searching For Answers
Car buying site just sent us a new car-matching quiz based on what it calls an “Advance Algorithm Personality Test.” But don’t fall for any of that fancy mumbo-jumbo—the test is total poppycock, I tell you! (That’s right, I said poppycock. I’m going there.) There’s just no way my inner...

Here Is How Much It Costs Me To Buy, Own And Sell Cars Every Few Months
I find it incredibly boring to drive the exact same car day after day after day. It’s like sitting in a classroom listening to the professor go on and on about the significance of celery stalks in the life of the Cacataibo tribe in Peru. I would do just about...

What To Do When You're Stuck In A Massive Auto Loan
We all make mistakes, and sometimes small mistakes lead to bigger ones—especially when it comes to debt. It’s easy to get on a high horse and tell someone what they should or shouldn’t have done; coming up with solutions can be a lot harder, and this debt-saddled car owner needs...

For $49,990, Is This 2010 Porsche Panamera A Beauty Or A Beast?
Porsche’s first-gen Panamera was a fugly car. There, I said it! Today’s S edition attempts to correct that with a body kit by Masonry. Let’s see if its price makes it even more attractive. In 1987, Mead Data Central pursued a trademark suit against Toyota on the grounds that the...

Bentley Continental GT Speed Breitling Jet Team Series: A 206 MPH Echo Chamber For How Rad You Are
As much as I love to and at the ridiculousness of a Bentley’s opulence, even I clammed up and enjoyed the car once I got to drive one. And let me tell you something: once you’re all good and wrapped up in that leather interior, nothing else that happens outside...

For $7,800, Could This 2003 Honda Civic EP3 Si Make You Sigh?
The EP3 Si was the last hatchback Civic Honda deemed those of us in the U.S. to be worthy to own. Today’s Si has pretty low miles, but will its price have you hatching a plan to buy it? If you want to own a Porsche, but also need to...
