Australia's Once-Beloved Holden Commodore Is Now Dead-November 2024

Cruel SUVs and crossovers and the normie’s near-unquenchable desire for them have claimed another automotive victim, this time Australia’s iconic Holden Commodore. Just because nobody is buying the mid-size sedan, from its lineup, which will now only be SUVs and, as the Aussies like to call El Camino-type trucks, utes.

Holden has stated that SUVs and utes make up 76 percent of their sales, and they think that will never change because nothing ever does. To this end, they’ve dropped the Astra hatchback as well.

The Commodore had been around since 1978, starting life as a mix of Opel parts (front from an Opel Senator, Rekord basic body, on the GM V-Body platform) but turning into something distinctively Australian thanks to a lot of re-engineering to meet Australian conditions. It was a mid-sized RWD car that, like many Australian designs, felt more American than European, and could possibly be thought of as analogous to, say, a Ford Crown Victoria here in the U.S.

The Commodore was one of Australia’s best selling cars for years, selling as many as 95,000 in 1998, though this past year that number has dropped to 5,789,

The Holden lineup will now just be the Acadia, Colorado Ute, Equinox, Trailblazer, and Trax, most of which are shared with GMC or Chevrolet in the United States.

You can also buy a Corvette via Holden in Australia, and I’m pretty sure that’s not affected by Holden’s SUV-only focus. I don’t think it’s actually badged as a Holden, either.

Will Holden one day regret moving to an all-SUV lineup? Not to be a dick, but I kinda hope so.

For $13,000, This 928’s Wad is Blown
For all its veneration, Porsche's 928 doesn't seem to get all that much respect. As example, today's '82 928S has gone from Weissach to Woodward, but is its price at least respectable? Alfa Romeos, like 2-year olds, require constant attention. Shoes go on, sweater comes off, they're never all the...

For $15,000, This Is A Pro-Tour Contour
While based on Ford's CDW27 World Car platform, today's Contour SVT is set up as a Safety Car for that most American of racing series — Champ Car. Will its price however, make it the most expensive Contour... in the world? The Contour wasn't Ford's first attempt at developing a...

Cracker Jack is a tasty treat that comes with a toy surprise inside the box. Today's BMW E34 looks pretty tasty, and the surprise 6-speed inside makes it ready to play. Will its price however, make you think the seller is just toying with you? When I get old, I...

For $3,200, Is This Alfa Prime?
Rossi are Red, Veloce are too, today's Alfa è bello, but does its price say screw you? When the Alfa Romeo Milano appeared for the first time at the Los Angeles International Auto Show, I dutifully visited the display to check it out, new U.S. models from the beleaguered Italian...

For $5,500, Always Know Your Door Count
If you've ever played Portals 1 and 2 you'll know the benefit of having a door at just the right spot. Today's Maserati gives you not one, not two, but four handy portals, but does its price take the cake? Oh Florida, you so crazy these days. First you cock...

New York is known as the City that never sleeps, and, the Big Apple. Today's '64 New Yorker is painted black which seems appropriate considering the city's unofficial dress code, but will its price have you saying I'M WALKIN' HERE, I'M WALKIN' HERE? Unsurprisingly, yesterday's walked away with a 68%...
