BMW Won't Make a New Z4 M Because the Math Ain't Mathin'-November 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:58

A red 2006 BMW Z4 M Roadster.

It’s been a long time since offered up a real of its purest sports car – – and, unfortunately, it looks like those of us who want one are going to have to just keep on waiting. The Z4 M was first introduced with the facelifted E85 Z4 all the way back in 2006. It stuck around for only three model years after both the coupe and roadster were phased out with the rest of the .

Since then, have come out, but none of them have properly carried the M name. Its absence left a hole in BMW’s lineup and my heart ever since, and it doesn’t look like that hole will get filled anytime soon.

Speaking with , Michael Wimbeck, the head of the project, said that even though BMW did “carefully and genuinely” consider a Z4 M, it just isn’t going to happen. Even engineers reportedly wanted to see a M come to fruition, but that wasn’t enough.

The reason for the no-go is a pretty obvious one. The automaker crunched the numbers and quite simply, the math ain’t mathin’. BMW is a business after all, and it probably is right in thinking that if it built a new Z4 M no one would buy it. It’s a damn shame, I’ll tell you.

I mean, how hard could a Z4 M even be to make? Yeah, I know it would be incredibly hard and expensive, but please indulge me. The regular Z4 already shares some M-underpinnings in its suspension. All you gotta do is ditch the M40i’s 3.0-liter B58 inline-six and drop in the . It could literally be a better BMW M2, and I’ll tell you why. It’s because the roof comes down, and everyone knows (please do not disagree with me) that convertibles make for better sports cars.

There may be some good news though. BMW Blog says BMW is apparently considering adding a manual option to the Z4, and it makes sense now that the . Is it the Z4 M we (I) really want? Certainly not, but as far as consolation prizes go it’s not too shabby.

The Best Part Of The Next Forza Game Is It's Free And On Your Phone
We’re entering a new exciting age of mobile gaming—games which are usually free and surprisingly packed with content. There’s finally a serious racing game coming to phones with Street, and I couldn’t be more excited. I’m not very good at racing games. I’ve never been. I struggle to transfer...

You Could Spend $280,000 On A Stupid Watch With A Fake 16-Cylinder Engine Or Save $70,000 And Buy This Car With A Real One
I know there’s a lot of overlap between car people and watch people. I get why; watches are full of the complicated mechanical cams and meshing gears and all sorts of metal bits doing things to other metal bits that get us all so weirdly aroused. I do get...

Ford Solves The Mystery Of The Mid-Motor Mustang
You may recall we repeated a plea from our friends over at who found an odd picture of what appears to be a mid-engine Mustang mock-up in the Ford design studio from around 1966. The image seems to have stumped their Ford experts and ex-employees, but I have good...

Is A Full-Face Racing Helmet A Good Choice For A Coronavirus Mask?
I’m sure we’re all being good little citizens and wearing masks when we have to venture out into the virus-saturated hellscape that is our current reality. It’s looking like all the difficult , so I guess we’ll need to keep it up a while longer. This reality brings me...
