BMW’s V12-Powered Hydrogen 7 Was Dumb as Hell, But a Total Power Move
BMW’s V12-Powered Hydrogen 7 Was Dumb as Hell, But a Total Power Move-January 2024

as a vehicle fuel, particularly hydrogen as a rather than as a part of a fuel cell system as in a or , is kind of contentious. It’s not a super efficient way to make power, and while Toyota is tinkering with the technology in race cars these days, .

What’s the Hydrogen 7, and why have you probably not heard of it, and, more importantly, how dumb of an idea and implementation was it way back in 2005? Well, thankfully, we have to help us with those last two parts.

The 2005-2007 BMW Hydrogen 7 parked outside a Ted conference.

As you’ll see, BMW made a lot of really weird choices that required some major sacrifices that nobody would have been willing to live with in the real world, especially not with a V12-powered luxury land yacht that was already based on an unpopular platform (Bangle Butt E65, anyone?). Things like a vacuum-insulated liquid hydrogen tank that empties itself over the course of 10-12 days of sitting, which also meant that this big boy wasn’t supposed to get parked indoors.

The lack of power compared to the regular gasoline V12 was pretty egregious too, but what was more egregious were . It was a neat proof of concept, but it’s one that the marketing department shouldn’t have been allowed to run with.

If there’s a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, it’s that Sreten from is taking the long block from one of these Hydrogen 7 V12s and using it in a performance build on a six-speed-manual E31 BMW 850i, and E31s are always cool.

We Asked An Expert If Pictures Posted On Reddit Are Really Of A Legendary Lost Bugatti
Ever heard of ? The name just means “the black car,” but this black car was very special, because it was one of four Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantics built, and of those four, three are still accounted for. No one knows what happened to the fourth one, the...

I'm Driving Across America Again But This Time I Almost Have A Plan
When I , I largely did it by making things up as I went, so committed was I to the idea that the best road trips are spontaneous ones. That decision, in retrospect, was what some may call “stupid,” given that it led me down the God-forsaken highways of...

The Infiniti G Was A Better Four Door Sports Car
There was a time when the Nissan Maxima could have been considered, dare I say, cool. But then came along its way cooler cousin, the Infiniti G35, the Japanese attempt to take on the BMW 3 Series in the sport sedan wars of the ‘00s. And it successfully did...

You Get One Guess Which Car Company Is Complaining About Having To Make EVs
We should take it seriously when the boss of Stellantis complains about the costs of transitioning to EVs, but I’m not going to be surprised about it either. All that and more in for December 1, 2021. Stellantis is a huge mix of international car companies, combining top manufacturers...

This Chinese Carmaker Is Building Cars From Histories That Never Happened
I think it’s well understood that what generally qualifies as the best sort of automotive design are ideas that are new, novel, and break some new ground, always moving forward, always advancing. That’s all great, but when it comes to stuff people just like, the rules are pretty different....

Blip: Hey, Look At That
I really like this old Mini brochure page for both that wonderful loose-yet-tight midcentury illustration style, with the limited spot color, but mostly because the look on the guy’s face in the passenger seat there is the face you’d make if you saw a squirrel wearing a little hat...
