Bring A Trailer Is The New King Of Car Auctions
Bring A Trailer Is The New King Of Car Auctions-April 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:09:26

This Porsche 968 CS was one of Bring a Trailer’s 2021 sales

When you hear “car auction,” you probably think of the big names. The Barrett-Jacksons or Mecums (Mecii?) of the world are likely the first to pop into your head, long before any three-word website best known for making the cars you like entirely unaffordable. But while we all stared wistfully at that auction list, like Dickensian orphans through shop windows, it seems some people out there actually could afford those reserve prices: Bring a Trailer outsold Barrett-Jackson and Mecum last year. In fact, it outsold them combined.

pulled the numbers together from various auction houses, comparing the overall dollar value of every car they sold in 2021. They found that Bring a Trailer more than doubled their sales, from a mere $398 million in 2020 to nearly $829 million in 2021. It seems from making their online pandemic purchases. Rich people: They’re just like us.

Did you spend nearly $2 million on this Carrera GT on Bring a Trailer?

The pandemic has , but Bring a Trailer hasn’t had to undergo the same changes to keep running. It was born online, free from such inconveniences as “seeing a car in person before you spend nearly two million United States dollars on it.” For some, that may be a turn-off, but Covid turned it into a selling point: Why risk interacting with sellers when you could find mint-condition cars online?

With such a staggering sales lead over traditional competitors, Bring a Trailer seems to be the new big-name automotive auction house. With the backing of , it’s unlikely to give up that title any time soon.

Four Reasons Why Leasing Is Smarter Than Buying
Welcome everyone to round three of the Car Buying “Great Debate” series. In the party-pooper corner, car is really just a slavery-inducing rental and you are throwing money away. However, if you work the numbers right, leasing a vehicle may be the smarter way to drive a new car. And...

2014 Mini Cooper S Hardtop: The Jalopnik Review
My favorite driving roads in the Austin area come up after Mopac dead ends into RM 1826 in Hays County. Then you're on some really nice, winding Hill Country roads down by Driftwood, Dripping Springs, and Wimberley. If you've ever heard of or eaten at the Salt Lick, you know...

For $4,800, Gear Up With This 2003 Saab 9-3 Arc
Today's contender will require some fancy footwork owing to its six-speed stick. You'll have to decide if that rare option, and its relatively low miles, ensures its price isn't the same old Saab and dance. Our fun and games were rudely interrupted yesterday when the object of our attention -...

For $15,000, This 1989 Toyota Tacoma Is Supra, Thanks For Asking
Today's Tacoma rocks a turbo 2JZ from a Supra, among other go-faster mods. Will those improvements be enough to ensure that its price doesn't put prospective buyers in a coma? You've surely heard the term hit the deck. Well, 82% of you took that literally, hitting yesterday's with a Crack...

For $17,500, This 1965 Sunbeam Tiger Wants To Leave A Streak
The seller of today's Nice Price or Crack Pipe Tiger claims to be Sunbeam rich and cash poor. Let's see if you think his asking price on this classic cat is worth reversing that situation. There's a TV show called that explores - in the way that only lurid reality...

For $15,999, This 2001 Toyota bB Opendeck Is All Kinds Of Toyota Crazy
Today's contender is a one-off Toyota called an Opendeck that's like an Avalanche for Lilliputians. It's super rare, but you'll need to decide whether or not its price is totally the poop deck. Well, while we were all Saab-knobing with yesterday's it seemingly managed to pull off an impressive 82%...
