Brittany Force Becomes First Woman To Win NHRA's Top Title In 35 Years
Brittany Force Becomes First Woman To Win NHRA's Top Title In 35 Years-January 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:18

Brittany Force, one of only two regular female competitors in NHRA’s highest class, isn’t just “one of the best women” in the field. (That’s one we hear all too often as women!) She’s the best out there, period. Force won the Top Fuel title on Sunday, becoming only the second woman in history to do so.

The last woman to win was Shirley Muldowney, who, even though she Top Fuel championships in 1977, 1980 and 1982, as a woman to known Great Car Men Bernie Ecclestone and Mario Andretti. She won her most recent NHRA Top Fuel title 35 years ago, yet still had to defend her entire gender to those two last year.

Force, 31, won her seventh-career Wally—NHRA’s event trophy—in the season finale, along with the championship title. She beat championship drivers Steve Torrence, Doug Kalitta, Leah Pritchett, Tony Schumacher, Clay Millican, Shawn Langdon, Terry McMillen, Scott Palmer and 2012, 2015 and 2016 title winner Antron Brown for the championship.

It was the first Top Fuel championship for John Force Racing, her father John Force’s team on which he’s fielded rides for both himself and his daughters. The entire title-deciding run, and John Force’s teary reaction to Brittany Force’s win, is hard to watch without getting a little emotional yourself:

That, right there, is one very fast woman.

But as we’ve been reminded of before, and instead of having to do this whole “co-ed” thing. That way, we can finally produce some female world champions.

Porsche Just Won Petit Le Mans In A Freakin' GT Car
Nick Tandy won Le Mans earlier this year in a Porsche prototype, which makes sense because prototype cars win these races. Nick Tandy just won a rainy Petit Le Mans in a Porsche 911 GT car. That’s not supposed to happen. In fact, it’s the first time it’s ever happened....

Jenson Button Stays With McLaren-Honda F1 For 2016
Jenson Button just confirmed what last weekend. Instead of retiring, he will indeed stay with McLaren-Honda alongside Fernando Alonso for the 2016 season. Despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise, Button will give his utterly useless McLaren-Honda another chance in 2016 instead of ending up hosting Top Gear or fishing abroad, fulfilling...

Why So Many People Think Volkswagen Is Cheating In Global Rallycross
After Volkswagen was caught with trick software, another rumor of Volkswagen cheatery popped up in motorsports. Could the Volkswagen team be using traction control to win at Global Rallycross, where driver aids such as traction control are expressly banned? Scott Speed and Tanner Foust seemed almost untouchable at Global Rallycross...

How Tanner Foust Went From Aspiring Doctor To Doctor Drift (Among Other Things)
During his college years, now-professional driver Tanner Foust’s career plan was for people seeking medical attention to line up in his waiting room. Life didn’t exactly go that route. Instead, people line up waiting for his autograph — no medical concerns required. Ahead of this weekend’s doubleheader in Barbados, two-time...

Nissan's Radical GT-R LM Nismo Will Return To Racing Next Year
There’s an old saying: “If at first you don’t succeed, quit and give up entirely.” The folks at Nismo do not believe in this philosophy! Despite struggling at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the bonkers front-wheel drive will return to the FIA World Endurance Championship next year — but...
