Car Fire Causes Closure of New York City's Holland Tunnel
Car Fire Causes Closure of New York City's Holland Tunnel-January 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:12:02

My greatest irrational fear as a life-long New Yorker is getting stuck in one of the city’s vehicular tunnels during a fire. This might be the plot of , a 1996 disaster film starring Sylvester Stallone, but tunnel fires do occur in the real world. Three years after the film’s release, 39 people were killed when a truck caught fire in between Italy and France. While Daylight’s tunnel scenes were filmed on a studio set in Rome, the film is primarily set in Unfortunately, this tunnel is no stranger to notable incidents.

A sedan caught fire in the Manhattan-bound side of the Holland Tunnel around 9 p.m. Sunday night, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Video streamed to , shows the car already engulfed in flames inside the 1.6-mile tunnel. The tunnel connects New York City with New Jersey underneath the Hudson River. Port Authority Police had stopped drivers from attempting to go around the blaze straight into a wall of smoke. The video concludes with an emergency vehicle arriving on the scene from the tunnel’s Manhattan end. It is unclear why the sedan caught fire.

The Holland Tunnel was the first mechanically ventilated tunnel in the world. Before its official opening in November 1927, the ventilation system was tested by a car purposely set alight inside the tunnel. The system successfully dissipated the fire within three and a half minutes.

Since then, the tunnel’s ventilation system has been continuously updated and was last modernized in the 2000s. You can see the ventilation system in action in the car fire video as smoke is contained mainly to the area around the car.

The tunnel was only closed for about an hour before authorities reopened it to traffic, but closed an hour later to complete vital overnight repairs. Those repairs are in addition to the tunnel’s scheduled storm resiliency improvements and repairs after Hurricane Sandy flooded the tunnel in 2012.

QOTD: So, How You Doing This Morning?
I don’t mean to steal Erik Shilling’s favorite reverse gear, but we were talking in our Jalopnik Slack this morning about how best to serve you, our readers, on this deeply weird day. Our mission here is always to do the best by you, which begs the question: how...

That Popular Netflix Series The Queen's Gambit Has Some Excellent Car-Casting
At the moment of this writing, the most popular show on Netflix right now is somewhat unexpectedlya period drama set in the ’50s and ’60s about an orphan girl who becomes an international chess prodigy. It’s good! Even if you don’t know much about chess, like me, someone whose...

Uber And Lyft Spent Millions To 'Delay The Inevitable'
As the dust refuses to settle on the national election, we do have at least one clear result: California voted yes on Prop 22. That yes vote means that gig workers have lost in what has a typically confusing but extraordinarily expensive (the most expensive in history!) ballot measure....

Florida Person Finds A 10-Foot Python In A Mustang's Engine
I think we all know the real problem with this story: it’s not that there was a colossal, ten-foot snake coiled in the engine bay of this Floridian’s Ford Mustang. It’s Florida, there’s going to be giant snakes in things. No, the problem here is that the Mustang in...

Dany Bahar's Coachbuilding Company Will Hack Your C8 Corvette Into A Gorgeous Supercar
By all accounts, Chevrolet’s new mid-engine Corvette is an instant hit. It drives great, punching way above its tax bracket. But, and it’s a big but, the C8-generation Corvette is hardly a looker. It’s a little too wannabe Ferrari and not enough standalone icon. If you’ve got enough scratch...
