Comment Of The Day: The Face Of EVs Edition-December 2024

Why do electric vehicles need to look like traditional cars? Why can’t new EV manufacturers make them look like whatever they want them to be? The batteries are in the floor and the motors can be configured in myriad different layouts, so why do they need a traditional two- or three-box capital-a Automotive design form?

Why does the Mustang Mach-E faux grille look so weird? Why did Tesla facelift the original Model S to have a little grille-like slit around the emblem? Why can’t buyers choose from any number of different EV car shapes? If ICE vehicles can look as disparate as a Plymouth Prowler and a Ford F-150 Raptor, why do all EVs need to look more or less similar to things we’re familiar with? \

I’m not creative enough to come up with a new form factor that EVs could take, but surely there is a designer plugging along at an OEM somewhere looking to go buck wild on their next EV shape. Here’s hoping it comes sooner rather than later.

For instigating this brief consideration of the future of EV design, I give santa clause today’s COTD victory. We are most assuredly in the horseless carriage era of EVs. Thank you, oh jolly one.

Gran Turismo 7 Is Possibly Coming To The PS4 Because Nobody Can Buy PS5s
Here’s a thought that is mildly disappointing: In another universe, we might all be playing Gran Turismo 7 right now. When GT7 was originally announced last year, it was given a tentative “second-half 2021" release window. It is now June 2, and wouldn’t you know GT7 is nowhere to...

Blip: Cars Named After You
Do you have a car named after you? I know for all of you Cimmarons and XR4Tis out there, this is easy, but for those of us with boring people names, like mine, it’s a tricky thing to find. There’s actually more cars out there with people-type names than...

Battery Swap Stations Are Gaining Momentum In China
The simplest and most genius-brain solution to charging times and range with EVs isn’t one you’ll find in America. In China, though, it’s gaining ground. All that and more in for June 2, 2021. China is like the American car market in so many ways. It’s huge, for one,...

is, in my opinion, the greatest automotive journalist of our time, and I’m not just saying that because he’s my friend. I’m saying that because he redefined what automotive journalism can be, and in so doing, helped make the car world more inclusive than it has ever been. Let’s...
