Could GMC Really Build A Legit Jeep Wrangler Rival?
Could GMC Really Build A Legit Jeep Wrangler Rival?-April 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:13:21

Rumors of GMC doing a Wrangler rival have been floating around for months. GM's apparently just polled dealers about whether such a vehicle would sell, but nobody at the company will admit to new product plans. Others have tried and failed to beat Jeep at making Jeeps (Toyota, Suzuki) so what would GMC need to succeed?

The new rumorwave everybody's riding is this story from earlier this week, which stated:

"The move, discussed with dealers, would expand a GMC brand that is considered to be the strongest of GM's four U.S. brands. In the discussion with dealers, GM executives said the new product would borrow cues and capability from a Hummer brand that appealed to off-road enthusiasts..."

and cited "several people briefed on the matter."

But we've been hearing about interesting additions to the GMC lineup since at least November of last year. Then, Buick-GMC Vice President Duncan Aldred told :

"There is room throughout the range if you really start segmenting it. There is plenty of room everywhere in the hierarchy," he said, going on to describe the potential for a subcompact crossover and an "active all-road, Wrangler-esque type of vehicle." Hell, Aldred was even quoted saying he'd "consider a real flagship over Yukon."

But with all of GM's representatives tightlipped on the matter after that, we don't have much to go on.

So let's stick to simple speculation we can work with. If GMC were to introduce something similar to a Jeep Wrangler, which I'm going to define as a purpose-built off-road recreational 4x4, what would it look like? What kind of features would it have? What would it cost? And most importantly; how would it be differentiated from the real-deal Wrangler in such a way that would actually make customers switch over?

Ted Nugent Was An Off-Road Racer
You probably know is a famous rock n' roller/redneck Jesus lookalike, but it wasn't until this 34-year-old photo popped up on my screen that I realized he also threw down in professional off-road truck racing. Photographer Randy Rasmussen captured the rock star with what he identified as a "state of...

2015 Mercedes Sprinter 4x4 Will Be The Only All-Terrain Van In The US
The stalwart and versatile Sprinter Van is getting a big boost in tough-terrain capability with a 4x4 system, low-range gearing, and body lift for the US market next year. Mercedes-Benz maintains that the Sprinter 4x4 is "not an off-roader," but it will definitely give cargo-carriers more flexibility in where they...

The 2014 Mint 400 desert race in Las Vegas next weekend has set a new record for entries with 300 total as of this morning, 57 of which are trophy trucks. It's going to be one hell of a field for this year's event. I spot plenty of rigs based...

Off-Roading Redneck Breaks Fall, Windshield With His Face
Hey, a Rural Willys pickup truck plowing through mud! That's pretty cool, sure hope he makes it over that bump. He doesn't? At least he's got the finest safety technology the 1950's had to offer. Not even that? Come on man, those windshields can't be easy to find. I don't...
