Could You Do $11,500 For This Supercharged 3.8 1988 Pontiac Fiero?
Could You Do $11,500 For This Supercharged 3.8 1988 Pontiac Fiero?-November 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:10:05

Like Rodney Dangerfield, Pontiac's Fiero never seems to get any respect. I think it's high time it did and today's 3.8-powered edition is a good way to start. You'll need to decide if its price is also respectable.

Annnnnnnnd, we have a winnah! After a drought that would rival California's parched-ment yesterday's came away with a 62% Nice Price win. Even in its arresting orange hue the original Riviera continues to get the respect a classic of its calibre deserves. The same can't be said however of one of GM's other famous rides.

Orange you glad I didn't say banana? Today's Nice Price or Crack Pipe Buick Riviera represents…

Look, we all love the Fiero, right? I mean sure, its underpinnings were sourced from cars like the lowly Chevette and gypsy curse that was the Citation. I'll admit that its base four-cylinder engine was derisively nicknamed the Iron Puke, and for good reason. I'll give you that. However, it was America's first mass-produced mid-engine car, the first with an innovative space frame topped with RIM plastic body panels, and with a V6 and 5-speed, the Fiero could more than just get out of its own way. Oh, and pop-up headlights, we love those!

This is all that and a bag of supercharged chips. If any Fiero deserves respect, it's this one. First off, it's an '88 model, which sported a heavily redesigned, and vastly more competent suspension. Secondly, it's that V6 and Getrag 5-cog box that we noted wakes-up the car's performance. Lastly, it's a GT model which has revised lines from the base car and which are still quite handsome today. I should also mention that the V6 between the seats and the trunk isn't the sturdy, 140-horse L44 2.8. Oh no, this Fiero rocks a supercharged 3800 Series II. Booyah!

That engine is described in the ad as having been a GM dyno unit, and was installed in the car by a previous owner, who coincidentally was a GM engineer. I wonder if they're still looking for it at the testing lab? With 240-bhp to its name, the L67 SC should open all kinds of new doors for this little Pontiac.

The rest of the car looks awesome, in metallic burgundy plastic over a biscuit interior. There's a sunroof, and quite remarkable excellent visibility for a mid-engine car. The insides are equally as nice, featuring the stock stereo and console cap instrument pod. The main cluster has been switched for one from a Sunbird turbo for the boost gauge, but it looks right at home there.

In addition to the Buick mill, the car has also had its battery moved to the nose, and there have been some suspension upgrades including Koni shocks, and some cool wheels. No word on how old those all are, but the ad does say that the car has 134,000 miles on the clock.

This is a very respectable Fiero, and one that would gather adoring fans at any Fiero meet. The car comes with a Buy-It-Now Price tag of $11,500, and it's now time for you to weigh in on how much respect you have for the seller's pricing acumen. What do you think, is this 3.8SC-powered Fiero worth $11,500? Or, is that price disrespecting?

You decide!

, or go if the ad disappears.

Could This 1970.5 Ford Falcon bring $16,500?
Oh well oh well everybody's heard, about the bird... You haven't yet heard about today's bird, but you will, and then you'll have to decide if its price might make you want to flip it the bird. Lincoln's '60s Continental, with its low-slung looks and suicide rear doors, was once...

This Saab 99 Turbo Is $37,000? There Must Be A Story!
There have been Saabs numbered 99 and 900, but today's Swede is specifically number 934. You'll need to decide if that number's import means its price is worth all its numbers. You're not listening to me people. I schooled you on close calls yesterday and what do you go and...

A Topless 2000 Jeep Cherokee for $6,500?
The Jeep Wrangler offers what is presently this country's only 4-door 4x4 convertible. If even that's just too common for you, then today's custom Cherokee might just top your heap, that is if its price doesn't make you blow your top. There are two trails associated with the name Cherokee,...

This 1987 SHO-Equipped Mercury Sable Is Asking $5,000
Today's candidate is a mythical beast, a Mercury Sable wagon that was long ago SHO-ified. You know you want it, but for five thousand bucks, you'll have to decide if the SHO must go on. Why can't you people make things easy for me? Case in point, yesterday's was neck...

Could This 1966 Continental 4X4 Pull $9,000?
The seller of today' candidate describes it as alternatively a Continental masquerading as a Ford F250, or vice-versa. You ned to determine if its price isn't some sort of bamboozling switcheroo. Some of you lamented that yesterday's (Good ol' #934) belonged in a museum, one of you went so far...

AWD Title Fight: 2015 Subaru WRX STI VS. 2015 Audi S3
Around 300 turbocharged ponies. Four doors. All-wheel drive. A legacy of rally racing that can only be described as legendary. The and are, at heart, remarkably similar cars. But they go about their missions very differently. There’s a night and day difference in character between the two. The WRX STI...
