If you’ve been looking for a new with a rear ejector seat then I have some good news for you. Euro NCAP crash tests have shown that the rear driver’s side door could pop open in an accident, which is definitely not something you want car doors to do.

A door popping open in an accident is penalized by , a crash test safety rating organization, as presenting a critical risk of ejection. The whole point of crash safety is to prevent people from flying out of the car and finding new ways to get hurt. Having a door pop open unexpectedly under pressure kind of nullifies that whole point.

From :

“Door openings during a crash are penalized in Euro NCAP since the start as they represent a critical ejection risk to occupants,” Michiel van Ratingen, secretary-general of Euro NCAP, commented. “Door openings are rare nowadays and it is important that VW is committed to finding the root cause.”

Somehow, though, the 2020 Golf (which, oddly, is noted on the NCAP as being a 2019 Golf, despite the 2020 Golf being pictured; that number, though, appears to stand for the test’s publication date of December 2019 rather than the car’s model year) still earned a in terms of overall safety. I guess the little hatchback was just so great in every other respect that the possibility of your backseat pals being ejected from the car wasn’t that big of a deal.

And it wasn’t the only VW to suffer from that problem. A door popped open on the VW Sharan during testing last month, which shows that this might be something Volkswagen is struggling with across the board. We’ve reached out to VW for comment and will update this blog when we hear back.

This Old VW Vanagon Brochure Contains An Interesting And Unintentional Hidden Brain Teaser
In these trying times, you should do whatever you can to soothe yourself, bring yourself quiet, almost meditative joy. However you go about it is your business, whether its yoga, large amounts of gin, vigorous, almost violent masturbation, whatever. For me, it’s digging through huge stacks of old car...

It's Time We Talk About The Racing Scene In Ready Player One
I must admit that I was cautiously optimistic going into the theater for Ready Player One in March of 2018. I’m right in the demographic for this kind of thing, nostalgic for the 80s and 90s, student of popular culture, and a fan of director Steven Spielberg’s oeuvre. The...

Ween--'Fat Lenny'
Traffic sucks, so why not start your morning off with some music? You provide the toast and we’ll provide the jams. It’s Ween Wednesday, the very irregular feature within our Traffic Jams which only runs when I remember to do it. After more than a month in lockdown, I feel...

The Caterhams Have Wings Now
Caterham’s only marketing tactic is appealing to the nostalgia centers of our dumb lizard brains. to a simpler era of sports car when Lotus could get away with selling a coffin on four wheels as a new car on the merit of its simplicity. Decades later, the British kit-car...

The Old Normal Isn't Coming Back
The car world is still struggling to get back to some kind of normal, but it looks like the old normal will never return. In some cases, that ain’t bad. All that and more in for April 22, 2020. One of the stories I’ve been enjoying tracking is pickup...

Dead: GM's Maven
GM’s , which was kind of like Zipcar, Car2Go, and Turo but with more GM, is dead. The service, which operated in 17 cities at its peak, allowed users to rent cars for short trips—insurance and gas included—park them at designated spots, and walk away. GM had very high...
