Driver In Finland Slapped With $130,000 Speeding Ticket-July 2024

A Reindeeer looks before crossing a road near Vikajarvi, Finland on October 7, 2022.

Finland; a land of , strange and a clever system of . This manner of handing out speeding tickets led to one of Finland’s richest citizens receiving a $130,000 speeding ticket for traveling 18.6 miles per hour over the speed limit.

Andres Wiklöf was traveling 50 mph in a 30 zone in his native home of the Åland Islands when the cops tagged him for speeding, according to :

Speaking to , Wiklöf said that he was aware he was over the speed limit which changed “suddenly” and was attempting to slow down, but did not manage to slow down fast enough.

“I really regret the matter,” he told Åland Island’s main newspaper, Nya Aaland. Wiklöf was also issued with a 10-day driving license suspension.

Under Finland’s system, an individual’s income is a key determinant in the size of the fine they are subsequently issued with by law enforcement. Finland was the first Nordic nation to introduce the income-based “Day Fine” system in 1921, and several European nations have followed suit since.

Wiklöf, who owns Wiklöf Holding estimated to be worth $10 million, may regret speeding this time, but this isn’t his first infraction by a long shot. In the last decade Wiklöf has racked up over $300,000 in speeding tickets.

Finland’s been charging drivers based on income and severity of speeding crime committed for over 100 years. It’s proved so successful that other countries have adopted the method. The highest speeding ticket ever issued was in Switzerland for a grand total of $1,091,340 issued to a drive caught traveling an astonishing 105 mph over the speed limit.

Did you know there was a decadently-four wheeled version of Italy’s famous ? It was called the Ape Poker, and while in Italian you’d pronounce that “ah-pey poker” and would roughly translate to “wasp poker” (as in the game?) in English we might read it as ape poker, as...

'The Lady And The Dale' Is A Good Reminder Huckster Automakers Will Always Be With Us
HBO debuted its documentary last night, which I dutifully watched. It’s called The Lady And The Dale, and I highly recommend it, if for no other reason than a lot of it will sound very, very familiar. The documentary is four parts, and only the first two parts are...

Toyota And Fiat Chrysler Finally Stop Supporting Trump
GM dropped support of one of Trump’s anti-environment measures back in November, and now Toyota and FCA are joining in. All that and more in for February 2, 2021. One of Trump’s more petty fights in office was trying to block California from being able to set its own...

The Check-Engine Light Icon Is Terrible And Due For An Update
I don’t know if there’s anyone out there that actually likes the check engine light. If you’re seeing it while driving, it just means that the rest of your day is going to suck and potentially end with you significantly poorer than when you woke up. It’s even a...
