Finland shares a long border with Russia, so it finds itself with a large number of yachts with shady origins in their docks. Officials moved quickly, barring 21 yachts from leaving their winter storage this week.

Finland is going hard on those sanctions. Trade has dropped more between Finland and its Russia neighbor than when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, So when it had the chance to stop 21 yachts possibly belonging to Russian oligarchs, officials moved fast. It’s very probable that not all of those yachts belong to oligarchs, but it’s not impossible either. It will take some time to figure out, as these boats tend to have their true ownership obscured in a maze of legal red tape. From :

The customs department began telling winter storage facilities of the decision last week, , which first reported the news.

“They’re not boats an ordinary citizen would have, but they’re not 150 meters long either,” Sami Rakshit, head of the enforcement department, .

“We don’t assume that all the detained yachts fall under sanctions, but that is what we are trying to determine now,” he added.

Mikko Pellikka, CEO of Yachtcare Finland, told Helsingin Sanomat his company had four yachts in storage at the Port of Loviisa.

“It’s hard to interpret whether the boats are Russian because they are registered around the globe,” he said. “We can’t say who ultimately owns the boat. Official papers do not necessarily read the names of the persons.”

It’s well known, for instance, that Russian President Vlad Putin doesn’t really own much in his own name, the reports, and that’s true for many other oligarchs, who use holding companies and shell legal entities to frustrate financial researchers.

Twenty-one yachts is quite a haul, but a bunch of boats can’t compare to the one really big fish capture in Italy last week; the Scheherazade, a $700-million superyacht which investigators believe to himself. It was seized by Italian officials in the Tuscan port town of Marina di Carrara. One of only 14 large privately own yachts in the world, the Scheherazade looks to belong to Putin, but it will be a long time before it is unequivocally proven.

The U.S. Air Force Airlifted This Firetruck 3,700 Miles To Nicaragua
The point of having a fire department in every town is partly to decrease the amount of time the fire truck has to travel to put out the fire. And then you have this truck, which traveled 3,700 miles to another country to help it fight its fires. Specifically, this...

Lanesplitting In California Is Now Officially Up To The Cops
The authorizing the California Highway Patrol to set guidelines for “lanesplitting” has been signed into law. Now it’s up to the cops to decide when and how riders can lanesplit. Kind of funny, since preventing officer discretion from happening is pretty much why the bill was introduced in the first...

What The Hell Is Even Happening In This Motorcycle Crash Video?
How the hell does one motorcyclist directly rear-end another motorcyclist at high speed in this situation? What is even happening? Alright, so I see that the first motorcyclist is following pretty closely to some cars, but with a big enough gap for the car filming to pull out behind. The...

The EPA says Harley-Davidson’s been selling upgrade parts at dealerships that push the motorcycles’ emissions over the legal limit. H-D maintains the mods were designed for “competition use only,” but has decided to settle with a $12 million fine and a $3 million forced investment in “pollution mitigation” rather than...

Worthless Airport Security Exposed At JFK After 'Shooter' Turned Out To Be Nothing
The idea of all the security we put up with at airports—the lines, the scanners, the bullshit—is so that when there’s an attack, we’ll all be orderly protected. On Sunday night at JFK Airport, we found out how wrong that is. and complete chaos ensued. The issue is not that...

Here's What Happens When You Ride A Motorcycle Through An Automatic Car Wash
Did you guess “you get wet!?” Somehow, I did too, and still thought watching this guy get high-pressure hosed on his Yamaha was hilarious. Skip through the first 90 seconds of nonsense to watch the washing. Oh yeah, you don’t need the soundtrack either. So yeah, this is a pretty...
