For $4,900, Does This Nissan have 200SX Appeal?
For $4,900, Does This Nissan have 200SX Appeal?-December 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:10:06

There's an old adage that says you need to use it or else you'll lose it. Today's Nice Price or Crack Pipe 200SX hasn't had much use over the years, but does it have a price tag that might have you losing it?

I have read that statistically, people tend to find the slightly imperfect to be the most appealing. Cindy Crawford and her mole, the unique irregularities of hand-stitched material, yada, yada, yada. Yesterday's may have proved that theory wrong however as while it approached the nirvana of Jalopnik perfection, its 56% Crack pipe loss proved that close isn't good enough when the price is too high. If only, as many of you pointed out, it had been brown.

I'm going to say three words, and many of you will immediately swoon upon hearing them. Are you…

Today we have yet another non-brown car. This is claimed to have been squirreled away for an undisclosed amount of time and hence presents today with only 27K on the clock and all its '80s goodness intact.

You recall the 200SX don't you? Called the Silvia elsewhere, here in the states the car played Jan Brady to the 300ZX's Marcia. Later on there was even a FWD NX to play the roll of annoying Cindy.

But enough of the '70s TV allusions, let's get downtown with this SX. The S12 edition of the Silvia/SX was offered from 1984 through '88 in both notchback and hatch body styles. This one happens to be the far more attractive - in my personal opinion - hatchback. Ahead of that feature but behind the pop-up headlamps (love those) lies a 1974-cc CA20E. That's an iron block/aluminum head SOHC four that produced 105-hp. A more powerful but smaller turbo engine was also available, just not on this car.

The rest of the specs are pretty respectable for an '80s coupe- discs all around, a semi-trailing arm IRS set up very similar to that of the contemporary BMW 3-series, and an available 5-speed stick. The ad doesn't note what tranny this SX sports, nor are there any interior shots to DIY is discernment. That's kind of a big faux pas on the part of the seller, I mean it's like advertising a stripper who's wearing a burka.

The ad does note that the present owner has been in possession of the car for a little over a year and in that time has gone through much of what time has taken from the car. That means it's riding on new rubber and there's a bunch of new stuff that you might not think would go south due to lack of use, things like the radiator and exhaust. Also, new head gaskets? I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think the seller has his facts straight. Call me crazy. No really, go ahead, join the club.

Regardless, the ad does say that the car has been given the once-over by a family mechanic. I guess that may have been more useful if it had been done by an auto mechanic but c'est la vie. It does look in the pictures at least like it just rolled out of the factory and there doesn't appear to be any noticeable blemishes in the dark blue paint nor any curb rash on the wheels. There is the questionable tape treatment on its flanks, but hey, that's just part of its '80s charm.

If you find this 200SX charming perhaps this is a good time to discuss its $4,900 price tag. That's because the seller has now returned from his cabin and is ready to deal. Seriously, this is how people in Minnesota sell cars? What do you think about this '80s Nissan with so much life left to give and its $4,900 price tag? Is that a real deal for so clean a coupe? Or, does this 200SX come with a price that SUX?

You decide!

, or go if the ad disappears.

Would You Go $6,000 for A Clean 1991 Toyota MR2?
The ad for today’s MR2 says it’s the cleanest you’ll ever find. That may be the case, but does that still mean that its seller will clean up at his asking price? It may not be Shark Week, but yesterday’s shark nosed sure proved to be a great white, er...

Could This Time Capsule 1978 Chevy Chevette Pull $5,000 Canadian?
Today’s Chevette is claimed to be original, right down to its - now most likely coprolitic - tires. It also rocks low miles, a jazzy plaid interior, and the desperate need for you to judge the originality of its price. Chevy’s attempts at a home-grown small car had not proved...

This 1991 Mercedes 350SD Asks $44,000, Is Originally From Texas.
The seller of today’s Mercedes has based its price partially on his desire to fund another purchase, that of a Ferrari Testarossa. That’s perhaps not the best arbitrator of value, but then, wait ’til you see this Benz. Howard Hughes supposedly collected, among other personal intimates, jar upon jar of...

Which topless celebrity would you most like to meet? Kim Kardashian? Ryan Reynolds? Patton Oswalt? How about today’s Chevy Celebrity? For $14,900, This 1980 Chevy C-10 Might Just Wake You Up
Today’s Chevy pickup is the epitome of a sleeper, looking stealthily innocuous on the outside, while hiding a big block secret underneath. Together, it looks totally awesome, but will its price cause you to hit the snooze button? Seriously? A two-grand car with working A/C and new tires and you...
