For $5,000, Could This Two-Top Two-Back 1987 Nissan Pulsar NX SE Be Too Much?
For $5,000, Could This Two-Top Two-Back 1987 Nissan Pulsar NX SE Be Too Much?-May 2024

When it comes to desirability and coolness factor, today’s NX may very well be a sure thing. That doesn’t necessarily mean however, that its price is a stone cold slam dunk.

According to the seller, establishing the $9,000 price on yesterday’s was a bit of a spaghetti and wall affair, as he really didn’t know what to ask for it. For most of you there was no such hesitation in discerning its value, and the Jeep fell in a 72-percent Crack Pipe loss.

Geez but it’s been a tough week so far. We’ve had three Crack Pipe contenders all the way over the hump, and we finished out last week on an equally sour note as well. Let’s see if we can’t turn things around today with a car that you just don’t see around anymore at all.

A long time ago—back before all we demanded of our transportation was a commanding seating position and illuminated cup holders—we liked cars that offered more practical features. Some of those included things like pop-up headlamps, T-tops, and rear hatch doors that you could switch out to match your mood.

Today’s has all that and more. And by more I mean a sweet 1.6-litre DOHC four, good for 122-horsepower and 101 lb ft of torque.

The NX is a car that if you’re of a certain age you would likely see and be filled with pangs of nostalgia. If you’re just a sprout, you might look at the little Nissan and wonder aloud, ‘they used to make cars like that? They actually sold them to people?’ Yep, the NX is just that cool.

This one, in two tone black and silver over a grey cloth interior looks to be one of the nicest left on the road. Seriously, for all of the car’s coolness people just seemed to not give a shit about them, and they’ve mostly all gone to Pulsar heaven or if they’re still on the road they look like Lindsay Lohan’s liver.

Perhaps it was the frustration with keeping the tops from leaking, or maybe no one really did want to switch out the innovative but weighty hatch. Or just maybe, the whole class of small sporty cars was winnowed down to just a couple of offerings, yet one more victim to the voracious juggernaut of the crossover craze.

Whatever the reason, it’s good to see this 142,500-mile Pulsar alive and kicking. Not only that, but the seller is cool enough to have taken a plaque at a recent Radwood event and even references Jalopnik in his ad. Mi Amigo!

He says that the car, which is sporting its Sportback hatch in the pictures, comes with the notch lid as well. It’s offered with a resprayed top coat but there apparently are some signs of active duty in that paint. Still, it presents well in the ad, even with the aftermarket wheels. The seller says the originals are gone, daddy gone, and that’s a shame because they were totally ‘80s hip.

Inside things looks similarly serviceable. The dash wears an unfortunate toupee owing to some cracks in the cap. The seats and other tactile parts look to be in fine shape however. Oh and look, there’s a five speed stick and three pedals in here too!

Pop the hood and you’ve find and engine that would seem pretty much run of the mill today, but was like the grand opening of a topless beach back in the day. The red cam covers bring the bling, and the whole bay seems appreciably clean and without any monkey business. A/C is said to work and the car has recently passed its California emissions test.

Along with the bonus hatch, there’s a bunch of other extras to add to this car’s appeal. Those include T-tops, rubber for the seals, and various bric-a-brac. All in all it seems like a car that’s been shown some love, and that’s now looking for a swipe right.

The asking is $5,000, and hopefully you’ll find that as appealing as the car. After all, we are all due for a ray of sunshine after so dark a week.

What do you think, is this Pulsar worth that $5,000 price? Or, is this multi-hatchback not a car for which you would front that much?

You decide!

Los Angeles, CA C, or go if the ad disappears.

H/T to Matt “Rudy” Rudofker for the hookup!
