For $5,000, This Turbo 240Z Does a Striptease
For $5,000, This Turbo 240Z Does a Striptease-September 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:10:15

For no particular reason, it's Nissan Week here at , and today's Forecast calls for BRE-Z weather with a chance of a localized high pressure zone.

Okay, first things first, this is NOT a real BRE 240Z - probably - but it does play one on TV but the paint under the primer would still likely make Pete Brock bristle at the sight. The seller claims that when he took possession of the car it was painted over in primer. He's been wet sanding that off, discovering the Brock livery underneath, much like a restorer may carefully clean away years of dirt and grime from the Mona Lisa, only to discover underneath that she's really John Morton.

The BRE 240Z dominated SCCA Class-C in '70-71, and had they been powered by what rocks under its hood, they might have been able to do so with one wheel tied behind their backs. This rough but running and registered 240Z sports an L28ET out of a later, and much heavier, 280ZX. The 2,753-cc SOHC six adds not just displacement to the 240, but a Garrett TB03 as well. That's good for 180-bhp, a jump of 30 over the 2.4-litre that originally came in the car. Torque too is improved, reaching a maximum of 203 ft-lbs, or 71 more than the smaller engine. Not only does the engine ensure this Datsun arrives places Dat-Sooner (sorry), but it also sounds pretty good as evidenced by its cinema verite-style YouBoob video. (Note to the seller- focus, pinky)

In addition to the bigger motor, this Z comes with a bunch of replacement parts already in place, including an aluminum 3-row radiator, new exhaust, some sort of leather seats, basket weaves, a new windshield, and 4 Wheel disk breaks. That last item may mean you should keep your old CDs away from the car.

Inside, it's half-way between fright pig and daily driver, the scariest part being the Grant GT steering wheel dog turding up the rest of the cabin. The seats don't look out of place, but considering what you're expected to steer the car with, you might want to check them out for DOT certification. There's no radio to distract you from the engine's burble, and the instruments have been poked out and replaced with aftermarket parts. Of course the A-pillar is festooned with boost and other gauges because. . . well, where else are you going to put them?

Back to that body, despite the BRE paint under the primer, the car really needs to have an audience with the Earl of Scheib, most notably for the driver's side fender, which is eff'd up. The seller says he took a stab at bondoing it, but dude, if you can't manage to focus a video camera, you're probably not going to have mad bondo skills either. On top of chipping off ten pounds of bondo and fixing or replacing the fender, you'll also need to TIG up the hole in the passenger-side floorboard, which likely presently provides ladies and kilt-wearing Scots with a good bit of flow-through ventilation for their nether regions.

Okay, so this Z runs and is a blue plate special, sporting its original California tags. Plus it rocks both a turbo 2.8 and a 5-speed stick. Sure it looks a little like Mad Max gone SCCA, but the basics all seem to be there, and the aesthetics can either be fixed, or left alone as a middle finger in the face of conformity. But is that ability to flip conformity the bird worth $5,000? As a point of reference, you could alternatively grab this for $2,800. But back to this Z, is this stripper worth the five grand cover charge? Or, would the seller need to shave off a couple grand along with the primer?

You decide!

2013 Ford Mustang GT: Will It Baby?
I had a blast with this Mustang, and so did my kid. This was the first car that, when driven in it, made him actually say VROOM VROOM, loudly and with fist-clenched, drool-spraying glee. His dad was doing basically the same thing. It's not going to shock anybody when I...

For $2,500, It’s An All Trac All The Time
Track and Field has for a long time been a popular part of the Summer Olympics. After seeing today's Celica however, the Olympic committee might just want to change that to All-Trac. That is of course, if its price isn't too far afield. Remarkably, there was not much love for...

For $1,900, Death Becomes Hearse
They say it's not the cough that carries you off, but the coffin they carry you off in. You wouldn't have to be coughin' up too much dough for today's Caddy hearse, but even for that price is it dead to you? Ding-dong the witch is dead, is the traditional...

2013 Range Rover: The Jalopnik Review
If you buy the , you probably won't be taking it off-road. You probably won't take it to Hog Canyon Trail in a remote part of Utah, where you'd be able take it up a hill and battle rocks, sand, mud, and snow along the way. You probably won't have...

For $4,000, What’s Not To LUV?
It has been said that love is a many splendored thing, and likewise that it makes the world go around. Owing to its 327 V8 and topless nature, today's Chevy is a LUV you might love, but will its price prove LUVable as well? First introduced in 1972, the Chevy...
