Today’s Dodge Demon is a custom car that once was part of somebody’s collection. It’s pretty wild, and looks pretty professionally done, but will its price make it worth adding to our collection of Nice Price winners?

Have you ever had a fancy ice-cream sundae, filled with tasty whipped cream, and adorned with chopped nuts and layered with rich, creamy chocolate? Now, imagine that delicious dessert treat, only not topped by a cloyingly sweet maraschino cherry, but instead by a hairy and hot cat turd, freshly ejected by Fluffy’s aft torpedo tube. There it is, sinking into the warming whipped cream, dispersing its vile ruin throughout, and basically trying to wreck the entire experience for you.

Would you eat around that, or would you move on?

A similar experience confronted us last Friday. Our really was trying to be all that it could be, even down to its Eighties-tastic digital dash.

Sadly, there was a fly in the ointment, a monkey in the wrench, and yes, even a cat shit in the sundae. What spoiled it for us was a set of way-rusty rockers. Those as we all know, can be both a pain, and an expense to repair, and so even at just thirty-eight hundred that sweet but swiss-cheesed ride came away with a 66% Crack Pipe loss.

Let’s move on.

Ford once had a body-on-frame but integral bed car-based pickup they called the Ranchero. Chevy likewise had a similar vehicle that they dubbed the El Camino. I don’t know what it is with car-trucks and Spanish-sourced names, and I also don’t know why Chrysler waited so long to jump on the bandwagon.

It wasn’t until the ‘80s that the Pentastar brand offered a car-based trucklet. That was with the unibody Dodge Rampage and Plymouth Scamp, both of which were more competitors for Volkswagen’s Rabbit pickup than the larger offerings of its American competitors.

This shows that perhaps Chrysler missed the boat. Described in its ad as a ‘Delcamino’ it’s offered up on the grassy expanses of what seems to be a front-yard car lot in a suburb of Pittsburgh PA.

It hasn’t been there for very long as this car was apparently out of a collection in Florida. The going price then was $8,000.

What is it and who built it? Well, it’s a Dodge Dart Demon that’s had its C-pillar moved up a foot or so and its back end opened up like Sasha Grey to form a utilitarian pickup bed with less than utilitarian access. There is no gate to drop in back so forget about sliding in sheets of drywall. Norm Abram, this is not your optimal truck.

For the rest of us however, it’s pretty neat. The work looks reasonably professionally done, and includes a little sidelight behind the door glass which is a nice touch. It’s also a hell of a lot better looking than that Evoque droptop that we showed you yesterday.

Here, here’s some obvious bondo work in the roof and buttresses and the paint seems to have been applied haphazardly, with plenty of overspray for those who like that sort of thing.

The interior is tidy and includes what looks to be an 8-ball on the column shifter for the Torqueflite. Aftermarket seats look a little out of place but are at least intact and not in need of any work.

Mechanically, there’s a lot to like too. The engine is a 340 - not a 360 as noted in the ad - and there’s that three-speed auto backing it up.

You might note that since its appearance on eBay, the car has gained an aftermarket radiator and lost its valve cover breather. Everything else save for a new battery looks to be about the same.

Not the same is the car overall as I don’t think I’ve seen another quite like this. It’s also being offered at fully a grand below its eBay purchase price - $7,000 - so it would be interesting to hear what has happened to the car, or what has been discovered, in the ensuing months.

Not being privy to that information, we’ll just have to make do with the brief description in the ad, and the breadcrumbs we can find online. With all that in mind, do you think this custom Dodge is worth that $7,000 asking price? Or, is this a Delcamino with a seller that’s delirious?
