For $9,900, Pace Yourself
For $9,900, Pace Yourself-May 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:10:10

In an alternate universe today's

AMC Wagon could have served as mysterious older brother to the scarf-wearing androgyne, Speed Pacer. In the real world however, the Pacer's options weren't nearly as flashy as the Mach Five's, but perhaps this one's price will have someone speed racing for their checkbook.

Speaking of racing, modern motors dumped into older cars almost always turn up the wick, and are usually considered a match made in Heaven. Unfortunately for the seller of yesterday's wife-unnerving 63% of you felt it didn't come with a Hell of a price. Guess it'll just have to keep intimidating his lady fair.

Capri Sun is a fruity pouch drink for the kids while grownups are more likely to prefer one of…

It's often noted that living in today's social media-soaked world is akin to residing in a fishbowl, an assertion to which I say bah! If you want to live in a fishbowl then you don't need Linkedbook, Facerest, or Pintwitter, you need today's restored .

The Pacer of course was American Motors‘ water balloon-shaped pie in the face of conformity that was originally intended to take GM's stillborn twin-rotor Wankel. By the time the wagon rolled around the complex curve rear glass that gave the car and Porsche's 928 a familial resemblance was gone, and along with it a lot of the car's freak show appeal. Still you can take heart that the passenger door remains 4-inches longer than the driver's, and that the interior door caps are still topped with teacher's arms to mask the fact that the windows don't roll down all the way.

Also, the wagon is more capacious, and this one comes not only refreshed in all aspects - or so says the ad - but also with the hood bulging V8 engine option. That's AMC's 304-CID eight, which in this, the last year of passenger car use, farted out a meager 130.5-bhp. Yes, that sucks but is par for the course for ‘70s American engines.

The seller notes that this two-tone Pacer is one of only 1,014 made, which is the total of V8-powered cars from '79, the last year the motor was offered. That engine required the bumped up hood which gives the car a sort of developmentally handicapped Aston Martin appearance from the front.

Aside from what looks like a bit of wear and tear on the top of the driver's door, the car — both inside and out — seems to be in excellent condition and who could argue with the choice of a red air freshener tree dangling jauntily from the turn signal stalk?

You might however take issue with the seller's pricing accumen and in fact it's now time to weigh in on whether or not you think his $9,900 price tag sets this AMC's pace. What do you say, is this survivor Pacer Wagon worth that kind of cash? Or, does that price make this Pacer a pass?

You decide!

At $9,900, Could This 2008 BMW 550i Prove To Be Pretty Nifty?
When someone says five-point-oh you probably go straight to visions of Mustangs and white rappers. Well, today’s BMW is almost a five-litre and has a stick to boot. Lets decide if its price has you saying five-point-oh yesss. Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be. The appropriation of that bon...

I Proved The BMW X6 M Is Actually Useful
Like many people, I could never quite understand the BMW X6. And I can understand the even less. Help me out, friend: do you get why BMW makes an SUV that’s essentially the X5, but with a steep, sloping roof purely for dubious aesthetics, then has the gall to add...

At $3,977, Could This 1992 Chevy Lumina Z34 Be The Light Of Your Life?
You’ll be forgiven if you never knew today’s Lumina Z34 even existed. Given its specs and price, you might just suddenly wish that you had. Is there anything worse than being a teen? Too young to fully enjoy all the trappings and responsibilities of adulthood, but old enough that those...

At $25,000, Could This 2006 Audi A8 W12 Executive Be Your Stealthy Super Saloon?
Elmer Fudd’s always pronounced his ‘Rs’ as ‘Ws,’ and would no doubt love today’s Audi. It rocks both luxury accoutrements and a “W”12 engine. That is of course, unless its price proves to be cartoonishly too high. Have you ever thought about how many great cars there are that have...

At CAN$15,000, Would You Willingly Be The Frog To This 1976 Lancia Scorpion?
Called the Monte Carlo elsewhere, today’s e Lancia Beta went by Scorpion in both the U.S. and this particular car’s home, Canada. Let’s see if its price brings a stinging rebuke, eh? It’s about 4,500 miles from Alaska to Boston, Mass., a distance apparently covered in some fashion by last...

The 2018 Volkswagen Up GTI Is As Fun As Tiny Cars Get
We knew that the 2018 Volkswagen Up GTI was last May. A year later, and after a week of driving it across Europe, I’m happy to confirm that the 2018 Volkswagen Up GTI is, in fact, the greatest car ever made forever and ever, amen. It’s just a shame that...
