Formula 1 Broke Its Most Historic Track
Formula 1 Broke Its Most Historic Track-May 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:34

Silverstone is the home race for the majority of Formula 1's teams, and it hosted the . Now it’s clear that the series has run the track dry.

Earlier this month we saw that Silverstone was trying to sell itself for £25m to Jaguar Land Rover (the latest trick for broke and historic racing circuits is to get bought by a carmaker as a test track). Today backed up that report, noting that Silverstone’s wealthy club of former-race-car-driver owners, the British Racing Driver’s Club, believes it is far enough along in its negotiations with Jaguar Land Rover that it sent out a letter to convene BRDC members at the track to formally discuss the sale.

But that’s not all the BRDC’s letter discussed, as Forbes also reports. The BRDC has no more money.

Forbes explains that Formula 1 tracks all get their money in the same way: none of the money from showing the race on TV goes to the track, neither does any from the corporate hospitality, nor any of the money from the advertising on the track.

Those revenue streams all feed back directly to Formula 1 itself and its . Having diverted most of the money away from the tracks, Formula 1 also charges the track a multimillion dollar hosting fee for the privilege of hosting a grand prix race.

Tracks typically get government funding to pay for the hosting fee, then they cover all of their other costs with ticket sales. This is why you usually see new F1 tracks springing up in rich and stupid dictatorships, like and These governments have no accountability and want some prestige, so they happily pay whatever Bernie is charging.

The man in the image above is a "saboteur" — not a pro-democracy protester.

The British government does not support Silverstone, however, so Silverstone has had to draw its little revenue from ticket sales to pay its huge licensing fee. And it had to revamp the aging track facilities back in 2009 for Formula 1 to even .

After lingering in limbo for months, Silverstone, the site of the first ever Formula One Grand Prix

Since Silverstone’s regular operations are loss-making, Forbes notes, the modernization project left the track borrowing $35 million.

It has been limping along ever since, and there’s a new story of it fighting against going broke, or getting cancelled, or getting sold every year.

Again, it’s not yet clear if Jaguar Land Rover will save the track. But if it doesn’t, it will be clear that Formula 1 will have destroyed its own birthplace.

Now Is As a Good Time to Watch Some Group A Rally
At least, it’s as good a time as any to sit down and see how the great world rally cars of the early 1990s drove on the rough forest roads of Rally GB. At least, it’s as good a time as any to hear them. I sent this video to...

The Carbon-Kevlar Rhino Car Rips
The Carbon-Kevlar Rhino Car Rips
It feels right that this carbon-kevlar bodied Toyota 86, the one with a hood bulge large enough to pass for a horn, absolutely tears up a road course. This is HGK’s new build, a nice application of the Latvian shop’s ethos that has been used on and before. Look, you...

My Bank Account Would Prefer I Do Not Watch This Volvo 740 Rally Video
My Bank Account Would Prefer I Do Not Watch This Volvo 740 Rally Video
A nearly-stock Volvo 740 isn’t the fastest rally car. It’s not the most nimble. But it’s cheap, it’s tough, and it’s probably not financially smart for me to think much more about them. The Volvo 740 doesn’t get a ton of love here in the States, at least in terms...
