Geely Is Reaching Out to the Internet to Name Its New SUV, Which Is Always A Bad Idea
Geely Is Reaching Out to the Internet to Name Its New SUV, Which Is Always A Bad Idea-November 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:09:49

The internet doesn’t when it comes to naming vehicles, but that’s not stopping Geely, who is looking for an English name for its new SUV, known in Chinese as Bin Yue. Knowing how this usually goes, I’m sure SUVy McSUVface will look fantastic on a badge on the tailgate.

Now, you may be wondering why they don’t just translate the Chinese name to English, and knock off early? Perhaps they considered that, but just so you’re in the loop, here’s what the name “Bin Yue” means:

The Chinese characters for this are 缤越, which is pronounced “Bīn yuè.” Yep, with a long “I.” “Bīn” means “fun,” but is also used in contexts, like describing rainbows, to mean “colorful.”

“Yuè” means more, but as a modifier, like if you wanted to say you were driving faster and faster, you’d say “more and more fast.”

So, all together, the name means either “More and more fun” or “more and more colorful.”

Also, I didn’t know any of that. I had to ask our own Kristen Lee, who asked her grandmother.

That picture in the tweet of the lady holding up that yellow smoke flare thing is likely related to the more color angle of the thing, I suppose?

It’s not a bad-looking SUV, as such, and if this is going to be Geely’s first stab at the U.S. market, it’s a pretty safe approach. It’s not that remarkably different than a number of other smaller crossovers, with its very sculpted side panels and that “broken” C-pillar. I do like Geely’s unique inset-oblongs grille design, though.

Hey look! Did she just track that Geely SUV, or is she leaving her track car to get back into her Geely SUV to go home? More importantly, what is she calling her car?

So, I guess if you have some fantastic name ideas, now’s your chance! If they pick yours, Geely will send you to China for a “VIP “Bin Yue” Experience Tour,” whatever the hell that is! Sounds fun!

Here’s some ideas to get you started:

Geely Enraged Wombat

Geely Sexraptor

Geely Firenodule

Geely Animalmachine

Geely Essuvee

Geely NMA

Geely Zuplank (short for zooplankton)

Geely Roadpounder

Geely Streetmusher

Geely Sleeksnake

Geely Driveham

This Saab 99 Turbo Is $37,000? There Must Be A Story!
There have been Saabs numbered 99 and 900, but today's Swede is specifically number 934. You'll need to decide if that number's import means its price is worth all its numbers. You're not listening to me people. I schooled you on close calls yesterday and what do you go and...

Could This 1966 Continental 4X4 Pull $9,000?
The seller of today' candidate describes it as alternatively a Continental masquerading as a Ford F250, or vice-versa. You ned to determine if its price isn't some sort of bamboozling switcheroo. Some of you lamented that yesterday's (Good ol' #934) belonged in a museum, one of you went so far...

AWD Title Fight: 2015 Subaru WRX STI VS. 2015 Audi S3
Around 300 turbocharged ponies. Four doors. All-wheel drive. A legacy of rally racing that can only be described as legendary. The and are, at heart, remarkably similar cars. But they go about their missions very differently. There’s a night and day difference in character between the two. The WRX STI...

This 1987 SHO-Equipped Mercury Sable Is Asking $5,000
Today's candidate is a mythical beast, a Mercury Sable wagon that was long ago SHO-ified. You know you want it, but for five thousand bucks, you'll have to decide if the SHO must go on. Why can't you people make things easy for me? Case in point, yesterday's was neck...

Could This 1970.5 Ford Falcon bring $16,500?
Oh well oh well everybody's heard, about the bird... You haven't yet heard about today's bird, but you will, and then you'll have to decide if its price might make you want to flip it the bird. Lincoln's '60s Continental, with its low-slung looks and suicide rear doors, was once...

A Topless 2000 Jeep Cherokee for $6,500?
The Jeep Wrangler offers what is presently this country's only 4-door 4x4 convertible. If even that's just too common for you, then today's custom Cherokee might just top your heap, that is if its price doesn't make you blow your top. There are two trails associated with the name Cherokee,...
