GM Is Getting Serious About Autonomous Cars
GM Is Getting Serious About Autonomous Cars-June 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:10:40

The main General Motors-related headline blasting around the Internet today is that it’s to work at a new research and development center in Silicon Valley to focus on the automaker’s self-driving car efforts. But journalist Mark Harris at IEEE Spectrum has an even more interesting scoop that shows just how serious GM is getting about self-driving cars: It’s gearing up to launch the across three U.S. cities.

A spokesperson for GM declined to comment directly on the report, only saying that the automaker “believes that autonomous vehicles will have tremendous benefits to society in the form of increased safety and accessibility.”

“Currently, GM and Cruise engineers are actively testing more than 50 Chevrolet Bolt EVs with autonomous technology on public roads in Detroit, San Francisco and Scottsdale, AZ,” the spokesperson said. “While we do not discuss potential future product plans, our plan is to launch our autonomous vehicle technology first in an on-demand ridesharing network.”

Harris said he pieced together the story using a number of documents filed with the Federal Communications Commission. And what the paper trail showed is that GM is preparing to deploy 300 self-driving Chevy Bolts in San Francisco, Detroit, and Scottsdale, Arizona, as early as May. From :

Right now the largest such fleet belongs to , which says it has around 80 vehicles on public roads in the United States, with nearly 100 more arriving shortly. GM says it currently has more than 50 Bolts with autonomous technology in the three cities. The remaining 27 manufacturers together account for just 89 vehicles, although , and start-up at least are also testing elsewhere.

The nuts and bolts of what Harris found is , but it suggests GM’s not kidding around with investing in the future. Reuters reported in February that GM hopes to have thousands of self-driving electric cars on the road in concert with its $500 million ride-hailing investment Lyft. Sending out 300 cars now, Harris notes, through its autonomous subsidiary Cruise Automation can allow GM to collect crucial data needed to make its AVs work efficiently.

“Running our autonomous vehicle program as a start-up is giving us the speed we need to continue to stay at the forefront of development of these technologies and the market applications,” GM CEO Mary Barra, in a statement.

Whether or not that was a slight to two Silicon Valley firms , who knows. But GM made it clear this week that it’s looking to take a front-seat in the self-driving car race.

Is Your City Trying To Get Bike Riders Killed?
Is Your City Trying To Get Bike Riders Killed?
I am fairly sure mine is. Today, the New York City Department of Transportation announced a new campaign seeking to increase the safety of bike riders in the Bronx. New bike lanes? Protected ones, with barriers, painted green, with lots of clear signage to stave off inattentive drivers? Nope!...

Lucid Has A More Powerful Tri-Motor Air Prototype That Runs 9.3-Second Quarter Miles
Nine point three seconds. In the quarter mile. From what will ostensibly be a production sedan. Okay, so the 1,080 horsepower twin-motor Lucid Air you can already order can do a sub-10-second run, but 9.3 seconds would put everything else on any dealer lot in the world to shame....

BMW Patents A Rich-People Car Privacy Screen That Turns Into A Display Which Seems Inevitable
You know those glass privacy screens in chauffeur-driven cars that the rich people in the back use to separate themselves from the unwashed working-class slobs that drive them around? Of course you do—it’s one of the key iconic elements of limousines. Well, even though it sounds impossible, it seems...

I Counted Every Toyota RAV4 I Saw In A Day And It Broke My Brain
Over the course of a 1,100-mile road trip, we could have counted anything. Vultures. Thunderclouds. Trees. Instead, we tallied Toyota RAV4s, and 436 midsize SUVs later my brain is wallpaper paste. It was hard, actually. Harder than I thought. My eyes have been a little bloodshot these past few...

The Volkswagen ID.4's Interior Is Happily Uncluttered
There’s probably no good reason the upcoming all-electric Volkswagen ID.4 (the one ) doesn’t have a bench seat, and I wish center screens were a little more mobile, but otherwise, I like the minimalism of VW’s design. It is, very happily (to me) not too busy, in new images...

Tesla Model Y Owners Have Found Home Depot Stuff Used To Mount A Critical Part
I know true Tesla stans like to believe that each and every car is created from a soup of pure matter, assembled at the atomic level via beams from Elon Musk’s third eye before having artificial life fucked into them in a beautiful and arcane ceremony involving Elon in...
