GM Is Using A Shuttered Microchip Plant To Store Thousands of Chipless Trucks
GM Is Using A Shuttered Microchip Plant To Store Thousands of Chipless Trucks-November 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:09:27

Let’s play “count how many trucks are a color.” I count the two red ones, though one truck nearby might be a very dark blue

General Motors has not been having a great time recently. The chip shortage has , drastically reducing sales, but those numbers are based on finished cars. The General has consistently been pumping out nearly-finished trucks from plants like those in Flint, Michigan and Fort Wayne, Indiana. But those unfinished, unsold trucks need somewhere to sit until chip inventories recover — and for Indiana trucks, that means a big taste of irony.

Rather than filling up lots at the Fort Wayne plant, GM has been hauling unfinished trucks to its recently-closed Kokomo, IN plant. While the facility was most recently used to for hospitals to use in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic, it lived a previous life as a clean room environment for manufacturing computer chips.

More colors! Not any more variety, bu there are more red trucks at least

The Kokomo plant ceased production of semiconductors in 2017, after GM called the prospect of updating the facility “” The local United Auto Workers union had to bring semiconductor manufacturing back to Kokomo, but no plan to do so ever materialized.

WISH TV, a local Indiana news network, who said that every day sees “truckloads” of vehicles brought to Kokomo to sit. Of those, only “a handful” return to the Fort Wayne plant to be finished. The entire Kokomo facility has been fenced off, providing storage for thousands of unfinished Silverado and Sierra 1500s.

Kokomo isn’t the only place GM pickups are piling up. With a similar situation , the company is building up a serious backlog of trucks yet to be completed. And with the chip shortage not predicted to end for , these lots will likely sit for quite some time.

You Might Soon Be Able To Option Your Wrangler Or Gladiator With The Same Glass As Your Phone Screen
Depending on who you ask, the Wrangler and, by extension, Gladiator, are extremely prone to windshield damage from debris, presumably due to the steep rake of the glass. At $10,500, Could This Simpson-Bodied 1991 Mazda Miata Get A Woo-Hoo Out Of You?
Today’s special bodied Miata is listed under “auto parts” rather than “autos” which may explain why it’s been on Craigslist for almost a month. Or, on the other hand, maybe it’s the price? Praise was heaped on the build of yesterday’s , but not so much on its price....
