If there are two things in life that I find to be inarguable blessings to this Earth, aside from emissions and such, they are the and any motor vehicle with “” in its name. Thus, similar to a department-store blowout jewelry sale where I may or may not lose control and hide everything I bought from my husband in various corners of the house, I am blessed to have missed the memo on the auction of this Hellcat-powered Miata until after it sold.

That would’ve been a hard purchase to hide, you know? I’d have to double check, but I don’t think it would fit under the bed.

The modded Miata is called the “,” which is also what my mother happens to call her cats, in addition to the occasional “shit head” and “Sir Poops a Lot.” It’s a second-generation 1999 model, with its original engine swapped out for the 707-horsepower, 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that Dodge puts in its performance cars, mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

It was at in Las Vegas this week, and sold for a full $36,300 compared to the of the Hellcat crate engine on its own.

Aside from the sheer size and weight of the engine in such a tiny roadster, which makes a Hellcat Miata such a fascinating thing is how much of a rocket missile it is. The difference between the Miata and the Dodge vehicles that usually get these engines is that while the and hover around the gargantuan 4,500-pound mark, the 1999 Miata is more like stock.

All of the power and nearly half of the weight means, basically, a lot of fun—$36,300 worth of fun, for the person who drove it away.

But I’m just happy I missed the window, or else I’d be down five figures and up in marital anxiety. At least my husband hasn’t found all of that jewelry I bought last week—yet.

America's First-Ever Diesel Jeep Wrangler Is The Torquey Off-Road Beast You Prayed It Would Be
For decades, diehard Jeep CJ and Wrangler fans in the U.S. have prayed for the low-end torque and high(er) fuel economy of a diesel engine, and for decades they have been denied. That is, until now; the ends the drought by bringing absurd off-road capability and the best fuel efficiency...

At $26,000, Is This 2010 Toyota Tundra Camper Totally Over The Top?
There’s a lot to be said for getting away from it all, and with today’s Tundra you ought to be able to get away and back again no matter where away is. Let’s see if that rugged nature aligns with its urbane price tag. With Ford going all-in on...

The 2020 Lexus RC F Track Edition Is More Cruise Than Missile
When I spoke to Toyota performance boss Tetsuya Tada at the launch of the this summer, I had to ask him the obvious: why not use a Toyota platform and engine for the Supra? Why go with BMW guts for such an important car? Why not—to put it simply—do it...

Someone Just Paid $51,360 For This Perfect 1983 Jeep Cherokee
The 1983 was the very last body-on-frame Cherokee, giving way to the unibody XJ model that was. Still, there’s one area where the “SJ” Cherokee trounces its successor: styling. And you can bet that’s a big reason why this 1983 Jeep Cherokee Laredo sold yesterday for over 50 large....
