Google's Self-Driving Car Unit Will Be A Standalone Company In 2016, Could Challenge Uber
Google's Self-Driving Car Unit Will Be A Standalone Company In 2016, Could Challenge Uber-June 2024

If you thought of as a glorified science experiment until now, get ready to change your mind. According to reports within the company, Google is set to make its driverless car program a standalone “” business in 2016—the biggest sign yet that driverless cars are something Google wants as a source of revenue.

A report in indicates Google is eyeing launching a driverless car service sometime next year, probably in one of the cities where the cars have done extensive testing like Austin or San Francisco. That would be a huge challenge to human-driven (for now) ride-share services like Uber and Lyft, not to mention traditional taxi cab services.

Here’s what they reported:

Google and Alphabet co-founder Sergey Brin suggested in September that self-driving cars could first appear in the form of a service, saying it would let a lot of people try the technology and that having “the vehicle come back to us every day” meant Google could rapidly update the machines.

Besides offering its own ride-for-hire service, Google probably will to try to capitalize on self-driving research in two other ways, said Mark Boyadjis, an analyst at IHS Automotive. First, the company may pump the same ads into self-driving cars that appear on Google’s search engine, and second, it may be able to profit through licensing arrangements that let traditional automakers participate in its ride-sharing and other self-driving services, he said. That presents the automakers with a difficult choice, Boyadjis said.

Earlier this year Google reorganized under the Alphabet name and announced several units would be spun-off as their own companies. Currently the self-driving car program, which has logged more than 1 million miles on public roads, is under the X research division.

But with automakers and tech companies racing toward autonomous vehicles, sometimes together and sometimes not, Google’s unit was unlikely to stay a research project for long.

As Bloomberg notes, and as we noted this fall, one of the most important yet curiously under-the-radar car industry stories this year was . With a seasoned and respected car industry veteran like Krafcik on its side, Google’s car unit could be a truly disruptive force in how we address driving and mobility.

The is coming, and the tip of its spear looks like a panda.

Watching Unlisted Driving Videos From GM's Cruise Autonomous Cars Reveals Some Alarming Behavior
Just in case anyone out there forgot, autonomous driving is hard. Incredibly hard. Getting two tons of inert wires and transistors and motors and lenses to somehow navigate a complex, real-world environment is almost comically difficult. The fact that we’re able to make machines that can do any of it...

Tesla Begins Deploying Full Self-Driving Beta To Select Customers But It Is In No Way 'Full Self-Driving'
This week, hardcore Tesla fans got complicated feelings in their bathing suit areas as Tesla announced the limited deployment of their new Full Self-Driving (Beta) software, which, based on the name and the hype, sure sounds like it’s a fully autonomous driving system for Teslas. Except it’s not. At...

Arcimoto Plans To Build 50,000 Electric Trikes Per Year And Will Deliver To Your Door In Partnership With DHL
Back when we got our first look at Arcimoto’s two-seat three-wheel electric city commuter mobile, it was called SRK and the company was aiming for 2,000 units per year. In the intervening three years, the model’s name has been changed to FUV — which stands for Fun Utility Vehicle...

This Is The Deal With Those Little Door Keypads That Mostly Only Fords Have (UPDATE: There's A Few Others)
Since I was a kid, eagerly scrutinizing cars in parking lots, I remember noticing something that only showed up on a few brands of cars: Fords, Lincolns, and the occasional Mercury. That something was a set of five little buttons, each bearing a pair of numbers, placed near the...

BP Somehow Made A Profit In All Of This
With the average price of gas , I am equally surprised and dismayed that an oil giant like BP turned a profit in the third quarter. And that’s with profits down a staggering 96 percent compared to this time last year. BP is the first of the big oil...

Here Are Some Real Tests To See If Changing Your Air Filter Gives You More Power
This is one of those things I suspect all of us have wondered about at some point or another—does changing the air cleaner on your car actually give you the power boost you’re hoping for? I mean, it seems to make sense — let the engine breathe easier, it...
