Guy Tests Tesla Autopilot Sensors On A Child Because Why Not
Guy Tests Tesla Autopilot Sensors On A Child Because Why Not-February 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:10:42

As far as autonomous driving goes, it’s still a bit of a freaky concept for most of us—whether we can trust the cars to detect objects, stay in their lanes and, oh, not kill us. In a test of the autopilot sensors on the Tesla Model S that included things from stuffed animals to kids, a YouTube user found some odd results.

Before we discuss those results, here’s the video so you can watch for yourself:

Testing of the Model S summon feature—an that came out this year—started with a stuffed animal, which the car failed to detect. The unapologetic Tesla smacked right into a poor, stuffed duck.

The YouTube user conducting the test, , then mentioned the duck’s low mass and ability to absorb to sound, which is an understandable reason for why the sensors could have missed it. A higher-mass bucket replaced the duck for the next test, and the car yet again went charging forward.

This time around, the front autopilot sensor did not pick up on the bucket at a 12-inch range as it should have done—from what KmanAuto says in the video, it’s unclear whether the car stopped itself with an inch to spare or if he did it manually.

One of the later bucket tests was successful, and the Tesla did manage to sense both humans afterward—child and adult. With all of the curiosity surrounding the future of autonomous cars, it’s interesting to see where the current ones succeed and where they may need some work down the line.

There’s also an important lesson here for current and future Tesla owners—the kids should be safe in the path of your car, but just remember not to leave the toolbox out on the garage floor.

Reddittor Wonders: Should I Just Give Elon My Money?
I know there’s sort of a stereotype about a certain sort of painfully obsessed Tesla fan/Elon Musk worshipper that is, likely, an unfair categorization of most Tesla fans. But then you see something like , and you remember that, oh yeah, sometimes stereotypes do come from somewhere. The OP...

Confusion Between Self-Driving Cars and Driver-Assistance Systems Is Still Rampant: Study
The modern car market is in a period of transition as features migrate onto it, and not in the joyous, life-is-about-to-change-forever kind of way. It’s more like it just hit middle school, and a bunch of terrible, miserable things no one understands are happening to it. The news now...

New York City Is Getting E-Scooters, Hilarity Sure to Ensue
As shared e-scooters have proliferated around the world, resulting in frequent hand-wringing and disproportionate media attention relative to the damage and inconvenience they cause, a handful of cities have remained outside the e-scooter bubble due to local laws prohibiting the little rascals (no, not ). One of those cities,...

It's Time to Give Semi-Autonomous Cars a Driving Test
We live, my friends, in a world of anarchy. Chaos reigns over our streets. We live in a society that tolerates half-demented, half-driving barely-robot cars. Teslas that can be fooled with an orange. Cadillacs that stare at you with the eye of Sauron. Volvos and Kias that require you...
