GWM Teases New Hilux Rival
GWM Teases New Hilux Rival-November 2024
2023-12-14 EST 02:30:38

GWM has the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger in its crosshairs and will soon reveal a new bakkie that willfeature advanced off-road ability. See details below…

GWM has leaked an image and technical details of its new double-cab bakkieahead of its Shanghai Auto Show debut, scheduled for 16 April 2019.

The Chinese band’s latest double-cab bakkie offering is unashamedly chasing class leaders such as the ToyotaHilux and FordRanger, with GWM promisingimpressive specification for its newcomer.

Referred to only as the ‘4×4 pickup’ for now, this new double-cab uses the Haval H9 SUV’s ladder frame platform and is expected to be available in a variety of short- and long wheelbase derivatives. Riding on the H9 platform, you can expect the GWM 4×4 pickup to feature superior ride quality, handling dynamics and load carrying ability that will outshine any previous Steed bakkie.

GWM’s product planners have developed the new bakkie to appeal strongly within the dedicated off-road adventuring market, which is evident in its styling. LED headlights, over-fenders and elongated roll-hoops give it the authentic weekend off-road warrior appearance.

Factory fitted features include a winch, snorkel and 3 differential locks (front, centre and rear), which will make this GWM 4×4 pickup the only bakkie with triple lockers other than Toyota’s legendary Land Cruiser 79 bakkie. GWM engineers have also produced a terrain-response system of sorts, with 7 modes of adjustment.

Engine details have not been confirmed but considering the 4×4 pickup uses a Haval H9 platform, it stands to reason that a 2-litre turbodiesel engine, available in select markets for the large SUV, would power this new bakkie too.

That Haval H9 engine is rated at 140kW and 450Nm and pairs with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, outputs and drivetrain options which would make the 4×4 pickup entirely competitive with its Japanese and American 4×4 double-cab rivals.

We will keep you updated as soon as more details surface, stay tuned!
