To say that the is a big deal for the Swedish brand is kind of an understatement. It's the vehicle that will usher in a new era of design, technology, safety and luxury for Volvo, all while hopefully giving their global sales a much-needed boost. In this country, that will all start at $48,900.

We knew that last year, but now we have some more details on XC90 pricing from intrepid Jalopnik European bureau chief Máté Petrány, who's about to drive the thing in Barcelona.

He reports that the base XC90 T6 with all-wheel drive — powered by a nifty 316 horsepower, 2.0-liter four that's — will begin at $48,900. The T6 R-Design, packed with more equipment and what Máté refers to as "sporty stuff," will start at $52,900. The top-trim T6, the Inscription, starts at $54,500 and includes fancy things like Nappa leather.

The T6 models have several packages: Vision (safety cameras), Convenience (some autonomous driving tech), Climate, and Momentum Plus (more luxury), all of which cost $2,000 or less, plus individual options.

Pricing for the top-of-the-line, 400 horsepower plug-in hybrid T8 model has yet to be released. The T6 models will hit the U.S. showrooms in July and the T8 will be here in the fall.

We'll see soon how Americans warm up to the new XC90, but it sounds like an interesting machine.
