Eight ribs broken in 14 places. Both ankles, one knee, and one tibia broken. A broken shoulder, clavicle, eye socket and jaw. A collapsed lung and a pierced liver. This is what actor Jeremy Renner suffered in January when as he was working to get a family member’s car out of a snow bank near his home in Washoe County, Nevada. Now, Renner is speaking publicly about that near-fatal moment for the first time in an interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer — including a harrowing recording of the 911 call just moments after the incident.

“I’d do it again,” Renner tells Sawyer. “Because it was going right at my nephew.”

The terrifying event unfolded when Renner fired up his snowcat to try and rescue a vehicle stuck on the private, unplowed road in the Nevada mountains. Renner has , showing the steep road and deep snow leading up to his Nevada home.

As Renner tells it, on the day of the accident, he had climbed out of the Snowcat, but the vehicle began to roll away, heading towards his nephew. When the actor tried to climb back into the cockpit, he got dragged under the treads of the PistenBully — a heavy-duty vehicle used to groom ski trails, weighing nearly 15,000 pounds.

Now, after months of recovery, Renner maintains an admirably positive outlook on the incident that nearly cost him his life. As he told Diane Sawyer, “I’ve lost a lot of flesh and bone in this experience, but I’ve been refueled and refilled with love, and titanium.”

Renner’s full interview airs Thursday, April 6at 10:00 pm EST on ABC. Here’s a sneak peek:

Happy Labor Day, From Our Laborers To Yours
The blogging callouses on the tips of my fingers are throbbing, and that can only mean two things: it’s either time to elect a new Pope, or it’s finally Labor Day. It’s an important holiday for we Americans, especially here, where we’re proud members of the Writers Guild of...

With a World Manufacturer Identifier and a striking new factory in Chengdu, China, ’s metamorphosis from racing team and in-house tuner to full-fledged manufacturer is nearing completion. The line between Polestar and its big brother from Goteborg, Volvo, has been pretty blurry. Started as a racing team by driver...

Jaguar Could Use Some Italian Help
Times are not good at Jaguar. Sales are down. China is not the market that the bosses at Tata thought it would be, and the brand’s star designer after 20 years. But there is hope, and it comes from Italy. The past few decades have been easy for Jaguar...

What's The Drive-In Junk Food Destination You Remember Best?
Here at Jalopnik, we know that a big part of driving is where you’re going. On a late summer long weekend like this one, we’d hope you’re scoping out a ride down to the drive-in for a burger or some ice cream. Obviously, in this age of fast food...

Welsh Guy Gets Fined For Driving With Another Car On His Roof And I'm Impressed
I realize that what this guy did is a bad idea, and he potentially endangered other drivers, and (£80 fine, plus surcharge of £30 and £85 in costs of some sort) fine he received. But that doesn’t change the fact that I’m pretty impressed he managed to haul an...

Massive Chicken Spill Turns Idyllic Brooklyn Street Into Grisly River Of Carnage
There’s no shortage of weird stuff that goes on in this little hellhole I like to call home, but even a river of chopped-up chicken bits filling a street in New York City will stop me in my tracks. The news spread after Sara Vilkomerson of The Late Show...
