Hide Your Kids, Hide Your Wife: Unstoppable Prius Out-sells Camry, Ford F-Series Trucks
Hide Your Kids, Hide Your Wife: Unstoppable Prius Out-sells Camry, Ford F-Series Trucks-March 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:10:10

Do Jalopnik readers need any bigger of a sign that the world is ending than the Toyota Prius being a bigger seller than the Camry and the Ford F-series?

Don't worry, it's only in tree-hugging, import-loving California. For now, though.

The that the entire Prius line – that's the hatch, the Prius V, Prius C and Prius plug-in – was the best-selling nameplate through the first 9 months out of the year in the Golden State, as 46,380 have been sold through September.

All of this is a matter of national concern, though. Look around and these insipid half-electric things are everywhere, sneaking up on people and almost running them over. Forget West Nile Virus, cab drivers with hybrids are the biggest threat to humans.

Even more of a sign the Prius is not a niche car anymore: there are lots in California with "Romney Ryan 2012" stickers. Crazy, I know.

Like the nation's best-selling car, the Toyota Camry, the Prius is becoming considered by all sorts of buyers – young and old, liberal or conservative, single people or families with dogs. This must stop. Prii might get good fuel economy, without sacrificing good handling, interior quality, styling, image, etc.

You don't have to torture yourself and buy a Prius if you want to see high MPGs. Jalopnik readers…

Just this week, I overheard someone thinking about trading in a newer BMW 5-series for a Prius C because "the mileage was so good." I had to jump in and suggest otherwise.

Do your job as a car enthusiast and stop people from buying a Prius. If economy is a must, get a diesel or some other car with 40+ MPG. If they like the look of the Prius C, tell him or her otherwise and show them pictures of good-looking cars. Suggest a motorcycle even. (No, don't do that.)

If the Prii have already taken over California, who knows what they'll take over next?

How Fiat Chrysler Is Fixing Its Sales Mess—Kind Of
Fiat Chrysler’s sales-reporting practices have put the company at the center of investigations amid allegations that it inflated car sales numbers for years. A new report from the company presents a supposedly improved counting method, which—after being applied to previous sales reports—reveals that Fiat Chrysler’s highly-touted 75-month sales streak actually...

The Ford GT Rejection Letter Is The Saddest Thing In The World
Witness beauty, denied. The rejection letters are rolling in. The new Ford GT is one of the most interesting and desirable cars of recent years. It’s a ready-made icon, but it’s still genuinely weird, from its cutaway aerodynamics to its questionably-super twin-turbo V6. Demand for this car is at a...

For $5,500, Would This Hawaiian 1987 Toyota Camry Wagon Make A Good Island Hauler?
How do you spice up a dull but staple recipe? Yeah, I don’t know either, but I do know that today’s Camry is spiced up by having a five speed stick and being a utilitarian wagon. Let’s see if that makes its price palatable. While there my not be many...

The Truth About The Warranty Expiration Notices You Get In The Mail
Today, I write to you as a pissed-off consumer. Actually, every day I write to you I’m a pissed-off consumer, because I have Comcast. But today, I’m especially pissed off about something else: official-looking warranty expiration notices. Have you ever gotten one of these? I’ve owned a lot of cars...

For $2,000, Would This 1969 Honda CB350 Have You Bellying Up To The Sissy Bar?
There’s something melodiously pleasing about the sound of a twin cylinder motorcycle, what with its putt-putt from da’ butt-butt. Today’s Honda is just such a small twin. Let’s find out if its sound, and its condition, make its price music to our ears as well. Honolulu Camry fans had a...

2016 BMW 340i Track Handling Package: Will It Baby?
You’d have to be a particular kind of moron to not be able to baby with a sedan the size of a . Or maybe a Duggar. But can you consciously buy one with a six-speed manual and the track handling package if you’ve got a baby on board? Yes....
