Honda Again Sets Goal to Become Only Second-Worst Engine Supplier in F1
Honda Again Sets Goal to Become Only Second-Worst Engine Supplier in F1-November 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:12

Goals are inherently aspirational. Kids want to go to the Olympics. Everyone wants to be the best, despite knowing only a select few ever are. Goals in , however, are completely within logical confines, even if it makes them sound the opposite of impressive. Just look at Honda, which wants to have the third-best engine in F1 by the start of the 2019 season.

There are only four engine suppliers in the series.

In 2015, the year after F1 went from V8 engines to V6 turbos, the current pattern of suppliers emerged: Mercedes on top, Ferrari in second, and Renault and Honda at the rear. (There are also lesser power units from top suppliers scattered through the field, .)

Honda just wants to be No. 3, and, while that might sound from the outside like a lame goal that the supplier probably shouldn’t admit out loud, it’s all Honda can shoot for right now.

It’s realistic—so realistic, in fact, that Honda had this same goal . It wasn’t reached.

Honda’s motorsport boss Masashi Yamamoto told recently that the company plans to “make a big effort” leading up to the 2019 season to be third, and then try to “catch the frontrunners ... during the season.”

That’s the part that’s pushing it. From the story:

“We are not really keen to say a specific time, but Mercedes and Ferrari have loads of knowledge of the grey areas [of the rules], so they are still ahead of us,” said Yamamoto.

“But after four years of our development and trying, we think we are now finding the right direction and where to go – much clearer than last year, or two years ago.

“So we think we can speed up our development.”

Honda introduced two engine upgrades in 2018, both of which resulted in better performance, but the second initially came at a cost of durability as it battled gearbox oscillations.

Pierre Gasly then suffered an oil leak in the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

Honda, which has mostly been a since it came back into F1 in 2015, made some improvements last year, as mentioned by Motorsport.com. Those improvements were enough to lure in the Red Bull team, which dropped Renault for Honda for 2019—given, Red Bull and Renault before the split.

Motorsport.com wrote that Honda’s optimistic about getting better before the 2019 season, although it’s “still trying to improve its reliability.” But neither Honda nor its new F1 darling, Red Bull, expect reliability to be flawless. They just want to work on catching Mercedes and Ferrari, which will take a while.

If anything, though, Honda’s ability to make realistic goals is inspiring. Even if the person or team next to you won’t settle for anything less than world records and sports superstardom, it’s alright to aspire to become only the second worst at something—as long as you’re improving.

Maybe this year, Honda will.

Entire Three-Wide Second Row Wipes Out Together In NASCAR Pile-Up
Entire Three-Wide Second Row Wipes Out Together In NASCAR Pile-Up
Sometimes going three-wide into a turn doesn’t work out. Tonight at Kansas had one of those times. Denny Hamlin came up the middle between Brad Keselowski and Kyle Larson, but when the No. 2 of Keselowski started to spin, so did the No. 11 of Denny Hamlin. Hamlin’s car then...

Rallycross Driver Spins, Somehow Turns It Into A Pass For The Lead
Rallycross is one of those fast-paced disciplines of motorsport that can take the viewer through about 11 emotions in a single turn, and this FIA World Rallycross Championship video is a great example of that—driver attempts a daring pass, spins sideways in front of the field and somehow saves it...

Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s Relatives In Court Over Who Gets To Use Family Name
There’s a bit of drama going on amongst the family members of the late Dale Earnhardt Sr., and it’s not over where Thanksgiving dinner will be held—it’s over who has the rights to use the Earnhardt name. The former NASCAR driver’s widow, Teresa Earnhardt, wants to keep the name from...

6 Hours Of Spa-Francorchamps' Winner Was Just Less Broken Than Everyone Else
No car in the top World Endurance Championship LMP1-H class went the entire 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps trouble-free. Fortunately, the No. 8 Audi’s biggest problem was relatively minor. Joining it in the top three was a limping Porsche and a car in the slower, non-manufacturer LMP1 class. That’s right: only...

The Best Way To Race Is To Race Everything
Most of us would be very tempted to strike a deal with Lucifer himself if we could go racing every weekend. For Tyler McQuarrie, all he had to do was find the right sponsor. He’ll be racing in six different series this year (which is insane and unheard of) and...

Hot Dog Hot Rod Laps Hot Track At Circuit Of The Americas
Here’s why we love the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile in a nutshell. Back in April, it went for a teeter-tottery drive around Circuit of the Americas. Why? Well, why not? It’s a traveling wiener with a big, smiling bun. The better question is: why wouldn’t you put that on a race...
