Aluminum's not the only thing putting the on a diet. The company says a greater proportion of "high-strength" steel in the frame, increasing from 22% to 77%, will let them drop 60 pounds out of the frame while improving rigidity.
Metalsa, which makes frames for many passenger and commercial vehicles, is Ford's frame supplier for the F-150. They use what's called "tailor-rolled blanks;" sheets of metal that can be shaped in varying thickness, to reduce material usage.
, 60 pounds isn't huge but it's certainly not negligible. The substantial weight reduction the 2015 Ford F-150 is receiving all around should help improve every aspect of the vehicle's performance, can't wait to see those MPG estimates.
