are in . Everyone wants that sweet, sweet weight reduction, especially when it comes to unsprung, rotating mass. But what if you’re a maker of budget performance vehicles, without the ability to drop for a set of ? When you’re banking on volume, those costs — both in construction and n warranty claims — add up quickly.

So Hyundai, for its N cars, is taking a different track. It’s working with two companies. Dymag Wheels and Hankuk Carbon, to create a semi-carbon wheel — carbon rim, metal spokes. From , the new design should be the best of both worlds.

The manufacturer claims weight savings of 40 to 50 percent over a regular cast aluminum wheel, which would be more like This may not sound all that impressive, but with wheels there’s more to consider than weight — you need to consider weight distribution, and how it affects the wheel’s .

When you want your wheels to change direction on a dime, moment of inertia is what really matters. It’s defined by a bunch of uninteresting equations, but the core concept is this: Given constant momentum, a rotating object will spin more quickly when its center of mass is closer to the axis around which it’s rotating. Picture a figure skater pulling their limbs inward to speed up a spin, or the way .

By making the outermost part of the wheel from carbon fiber, Dymag can reduce a wheel’s moment of inertia — likely by a considerable margin, since inertia scales with radius squared — without shelling out for full carbon construction. That means better response from the front wheels when changing direction, faster acceleration and deceleration, an outsized effect from the comparatively small amount of carbon used.

How the math all shakes out on Hyundai’s new wheels is yet to be seen — we don’t yet know their size, mass, weight distribution, any of the numbers we’d need to calculate out a reduction in moment of inertia. But, behind the wheel, you likely won’t need all that math anyway. If Dymax and Hankuk got their new construction method right, you’ll feel the difference.

I Drove The 1,000 HP Hellcat-Powered 'Jalop Gold' AMC Javelin; It Was Bonkers
In just a quick glance, you can tell that this isn’t even remotely messing around. A menacing face, a huge hood, and massive fenders wrapped over three-piece HRE wheels. A thousand horses from a 6.2-liter supercharged Dodge Hellcat engine. An opulent gold paint job. The only thing better than a...

For $49,000, Does This 2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP Prove Patience Is A Virtue?
Today’s Solstice has done just 25 miles over the course of its nine years of life. That makes it practically new, but does it also make its price practically a steal? Let me ask you something; would you eat at Chipotle? That question arises because, while their burritos and burritos...

I Need A Cheap Ride That Can Handle My Drum Set! What Car Should I Buy?
Dan is a drummer on the weekends who has been rocking a 2006 Chevy Malibu Maxx (Google it if you need, we can wait) that is getting old and now missing some beats. It’s time for an upgrade. He wants something that can handle his gear but isn’t expensive or...

At $14,800, Could You Get Enthused About Owning This 2005 Dodge Neon ACR?
The seller of today’s ACR says it’s been “enthusiast owned.” That’s sometimes code for “hung out and wrung out,” but will it also make this low mileage SRT4’s price a code that no one will want to crack? Quick show of hands—who here prefers Weird Al’s Eat It parody over...

For $1,100, Could This Converted 1988 Chevy B-Series Get This Party Started?
Today’s Chevy B-series takes a school bus and turns it into a cool bus. It’s still priced to sell because its brakes are dragging, but could that price itself be in need of a break? Imagine this scenario if you will: you fish a freshly laid cat turd out of...

What Car Would You Overpay For?
Some cars defy rationality with their market prices, yet we consistently seem amazed there are people willing to pony up for them. Perhaps you can’t put a price on dreams. Is there a dream car out there that would make you pay more than you should? Recently, I was working...
