“I saw this at a rest stop in PA,” Jalopnik reader Joe wrote to me. “Any idea what it is?” Well, yes, but I have no idea what the fuselage of a C-130 Hercules airplane is doing getting dragged behind a truck. It makes for quite a sight, though.

Yeah, I can’t really tell if this is a movie prop, a derelict destined for a graveyard, or just a weird way to shunt a military aircraft when you don’t want to pay for fuel but it’s certainly not something you see on the highway every day.

When it’s intact, a Lockheed C-130 can haul 45,000 pounds of pretty much whatever into the sky and carry it for more than 2,000 nautical miles.

One of these is also almost 100 feet long and 40 feet high, with a wingspan of over 130 feet. So you can see why this one had its wings clipped before being carried on the ground.

There don’t seem to be any markings on this Hercules shell, and the tail which might have had a number is totally missing so it’s hard to tell what this plane was up to before it was dismantled.

Craigslist be like “ran when landed.” The airframe, what’s left of it, would still be worth a few bucks to somebody I’m sure. Even as-is. It’d make a hell of a guest house.
