Is A Plug-In Hybrid Rally Rig Cool Enough To Make You Like Mitsubishi?
Is A Plug-In Hybrid Rally Rig Cool Enough To Make You Like Mitsubishi?-July 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:13:25

Mitsubishi is throwing down with a 2015 Outlander PHEV in the "Electric Class" of the Asia Cross Country Rally this summer, which will take the plug-in and competitors from Thailand to Cambodia.

I love the idea of an EV off-road racer, if only because electric drive adds such a huge heap of extra challenges for the team. How do they build the vehicle around the battery's weight distribution? What if they get lost and miss their chance to charge? What kind of trouble will they get into at water crossings?

I didn't get to follow the race last year when the Outlander PHEV made its racing debut, but I'm keen to see what they get into this summer.

More on the race rig and the event itself straight from Mitsubishi:

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) announces that it will dispatch a team of technical support engineers for an Outlander PHEV entered in the T1.3 4x4 Electric class of the gruelling 2,200km FIA-certified Asia Cross Country Rally 2014 (AXCR) from August 9 through 15, to be run from Thailand to Cambodia. The Two & Four Motor Sports rally team (Two & Four), headed by Kenji Ishida, will run an Outlander PHEV in the race for the second straight year. MMC engineers will provide Two & Four's team technical support for the plug-in hybrid four-wheel drive SUV for the duration of the rally. MMC will utilize valuable data and knowhow acquired by the technical support team in future vehicle development.

The 19th edition of the AXCR will get under way with the Ceremonial Start in the Thai beach resort of Pattaya on Saturday August 9. The next day, August 10, sees the start of the rally proper as Leg 1 takes entrants from Pattaya to Sakaeo. On August 12, Leg 3 of the rally takes the competitors into Cambodia and past the World Heritage site of Angkor Wat. The event finishes in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh on Friday August 15. The AXCR covers a total distance of 2,200 km and offers a gruelling test of all-terrain performance and durability as it requires competitors to conquer mountains, forests, swamps and river crossings.

The Outlander PHEV rally car will use competition suspension and reinforced mountings to raise ground clearance and improve all-terrain performance over poor surfaces. The vehicle's S-AWC integrated vehicle dynamics control system will be tuned for competition use to deliver better traction. Other modifications include the fitting of a roll cage and under body skid plate, the use of lighter engine hood, rear gate and interior parts, and additional sealing and a snorkel for water crossings.

The Audi Q8 EV SUV Comes With More Power Than An R8 E-Tron
Here's your sneak peek at Audi's top of the range forever coming Model X. The Q8 also plays a vital role in Audi's electric car strategy. I got the impression at the Geneva Motor Show that Audi only presented the fancy hybrid wagon to prove that it's indeed possible to...

Watch Engineers Beat The Bejesus Out Of A 2016 Nissan Titan Diesel
Here's how the Cummins-diesel powered was bumped, shaken, and slammed all over America to simulate about 350,000 miles of regular use, work, and off-road driving. Video's heavy on marketing rhetoric (and goofy iMovie title screens), but who doesn't love seeing a prototype get its butt kicked?! The testing we're seeing...

Well, Here's What A Genuine Toyota Hilux Diesel Sells For In America
If you think Toyota trucks are too expensive, don't bother looking at this pristine crew-cab 1989 Hilux diesel. It's reportedly "100% legal" for US road-use and is currently for sale with a clean Minnesota title... for the price of a decent brand-new Tacoma. I've never seen one of these for...

How Land Rover, Land Cruiser, And Jeep Owners See Each Other
The "holy trinity" of off-road brands (at least in the US) is Land Rover, Toyota, and Jeep. So a reader and off-road enthusiast has cooked up this hilarious key illustrating each brand's stereotype... according to rival enthusiasts. ...

This Restomod Army Truck Is The Cleanest And Coolest 'Deuce And A Half'
M35 "deuce and a half" army trucks are surprisingly easy to come by. If you can't find one rotting in some farmer's field, there are always a handful selling cheap at . But I've never seen one re-imagined as beautifully as this. This particular 1978 M35A2 was just for sale...

Watch This 'Car' Somersault, Barrel Roll, And Keep Driving Like A Boss
Shannon Campbell's got a well-earned reputation as an unstoppable off-road racer. Ride along with him as he somersaults, then barrel rolls his 600+ horsepower "car" at race pace... then powers-on and keeps on charging ahead soon as his wheels hit the dirt again. We say "car" because of course this...
