Is This 1984 Porsche 911 A Steal At $12,000?
Is This 1984 Porsche 911 A Steal At $12,000?-June 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:10:05

If you haven't noticed, prices for air-cooled Porsches are going through the roof. Today's 911 may still be a way to get in on the ground floor, as long as you think it has a bargain basement price.

Maintaining the dwelling metaphor, let's, for a moment, contemplate the attic, home to many a disfigured and shunned family member. Oh the years I spent in those dark and spidery confines. That's also where fully 98% of you would probably banish yesterday's uniquely customized , owing to its bizarre appearance and too many zeros price tag.

If you like to let it all hang out then you'll love today's Nice Price or Crack Pipe VW Karmann…

Today's candidate is also from Germany, and additionally has had its looks monkeyed with. That being said, it's an , and the changes wrought upon it still manage to keep it in the family.

The family that presently owns this car lost a son 3 years ago, and according to the ad, the car has sat in the garage ever since. Who could blame them after such a tragic loss? Other things the ad imparts is that the '80s car has been given '90s clothes. The bodywork is the smoothed-out and widened 993 turbo style, as penned by Toni Hatter.

Of course it has a whale tail, no visually modded 911 ever excludes that add-on. Here it's somewhere in between the 993 turbo's massive tea tray and a Clubsport's loop wing. The wheels are also 993-esque, although the ones in back are so heavily dished that it's obvious that the chassis didn't follow the body in going wide.

That proves that beauty is only skin deep as while this car looks like a 993, it obviously lacks the alloy subframe and widened multi-link suspension that was originally designed for the 989 four-door, but saw production in the last of the air-cooled 911s.

The interior looks like it might require sunglasses as the seats are a riot of yellow fields and piping. They look a little sketchy, but the rest of the cockpit - based on the blurry photos at least - seems okay.

Other factors that might influence your vote include mileage - 133,000 on the clock - the fact that it has a clear title and no accidents, and the ominous note that it NEEDS PAINT. Oh and the fact that it has sat for three years, that too might weigh on your decision.

What is that decision? Well, based on the presentation in the ad, whether this Porsche is worth its $12,000 asking price. As I noted at the beginning, these cars are now very dear, and it's your job to vote on whether this one's price tag a bargain, or has you saying oh dear!

You decide!

Memphis , or go if the ad disappears.

For $18,500, Could This 1986 Land Rover Santana 109 Turbo Diesel Be Muy Bueno?
Today’s Land Rover was built in Spain, where the rain falls mainly on the plain. It’s here in the U.S. now, and we’ll have to decide if its price and kit might have you making it rain. The Rocky Mountain community of Aspen Colorado is a playground for the wealthy...

For $6,250, This 1988 Citroën CX 2200 TRS Could Be Your One Shade of Grey (Market)
Grey market cars like today’s Citroën CX are always a roll of the dice. Parts and service are often sketchy, but that can be overcome by exclusivity and uniqueness. That is, if the price is right. Rabbit season! Duck season! Rabbit season! Duck season! Well, apparently it’s definitely not Rabbit...

For $9,500, Might This Rare 1978 Dodge Aspen Leave You Quaking?
Today’s Aspen (no, not the SUV) is claimed to be only one of 145 to have been its peculiar mix of luxury fitment and economy aspirations. While obviously not popular when new, let’s see if its price makes it in vogue now. Citroën’s used to be weird. I mean like...

For $16,500, This 1979 Isuzu 117-XG Could Make You An Irregular Joe
While Joe Isuzu used to prevaricate in order to sell Isuzus that was only because he didn’t have cars like today’s 117-XG to hawk. This one is as rare as it is pretty, but will it’s price still prove a deal, and that’s no lie? Three-quarters of the Earth’s surface...
