Jalopnik Reviews: 2007 GMC Yukon Denali, Part 1
Jalopnik Reviews: 2007 GMC Yukon Denali, Part 1-March 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:10:21

This is almost Jalopnik Reviews: Mercury Part 2: Attack of the Clones. Okay, this time it's a GMC Yukon Denali, clone to the Chevrolet Tahoe and Cadillac Escalade. Lest you think this is a Tahoe with a badge slapped on it instead of the "professional grade" product you've come to expect from GMC, know that all of the sheet metal in front of the windshield is unique to the Yukon. The upgrade from everyday Yukon to the chrometastic Denali (even the headlights are shinier) comes with a 380-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 that is unavailable in the Tahoe. This is the same engine found on the Escalade, although the 'Slade has an output of 403 hp to keep it on top of the corporate pecking order. How's that for brand strategy?

Inside, the Yukon is almost exactly like the Tahoe. The main difference is a Denali badge on the steering wheel, and wood-covered doors on the center console bins. Not to say that it's not a decent interior, but is it too much to ask for a different gauge cluster, radio, and HVAC controls?

Driving the Denali is an eye-opening experience into the world of suburban life. This thing is huge. But it would be wrong to condemn the Denali for being in a stupid segment. Whether or not this is the best solution to hauling six or seven passengers is not the matter. And in some regards, excess is a deep-rooted American cultural tradition that goes all the way back to Manifest Destiny. So the real question is, does the Yukon succeed in what it sets out to do?

The answer is a solid yes. The engine is amazingly powerful, never mind the bollocks or the fuel economy. Steering, ride, and refinement are all best in class, although the upcoming Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator might challenge that superlative. And it's not to say the Yukon is without faults. The third row seats, for example, are heavy to remove and take up too much space when folded. But the biggest fault with the Denali is the problem with every corporate clone. A standard Yukon or Tahoe starts around $35,000, and while each has fewer niceties and a less-powerful engine than the Denali, they offer the same level of functionality. Is the upgrade worth the price? Previous sales, and GMC continued use of the Denali nameplate suggests that customers say yes. And the Denali has a standard power liftgate that makes this reviewer weak in the knees, but that will all be covered in Part 2. [by Mike Austin]

Would You Pay CA$10,500 For This 1959 Falcon Caribbean Time Capsule?
Today's contender is an unfinished project… from the '60s! It's as idiosyncratic a throwback as Austin Powers and twice as British, but will its price prove to be groovy, baby? Over in Great Britain, they use the Pound Sterling for moolah, while here in America we tell people we don't...

Would You Pay $16,000 For This Diesel 1985 Jeep Scrambler?
The Scrambler has long been one of Jeep's more sought-after editions. Add in the Cummins diesel that has been bolted to today's contender and the only thing that you might think is left to do is to see if its price makes it worth the scramble. Yesterday's started on the...

For $21,500, You Could Live In This 1970 Ford Bronco
The ad for today's Bronco claims it was once used for geology work. It's also got a 3 on the tree and a cool camper top, but you'll have to decide if its seller is nothing but a gold digger. The quote ' the whole is greater than the sum...

2015 Infiniti Q50S Hybrid: The Jalopnik Review
Infinitis are boring. Infinitis are for marketing VPs. Infinitis have no appeal. Infinitis are just uprated Nissans. These notions are all part of the grand public mythos of Infiniti. And all of them are false. Well, mostly. That one about Infinitis being for marketing VPs is probably true. But Infiniti...

For $2,200, This 1991 Sterling 827SLi Could Become A Legend
Paul Revere is famous for alerting the colonial militia of the impending British invasion, and, when not being tattletale, for being a silversmith. Today's Sterling represents another British attempt to gain a foothold on American soil, and is named after Britain's currency. Will its price however, require too much of...

It'll Cost You $17,000 To Add A Fire Extinguisher To Your Corvette Z06
A Corvette Z06 is a pretty good deal for what it is, but it's not exactly cheap. It starts at about $80 grand, and as you can imagine, there's some pricey options: racing stripes are $950, a carbon fiber ground effects package is $3995, and a fire extinguisher is as...
