is shutting down its only factory — the largest car market in the world. It’s reportedly due to increased meddling by local politicians.

According to , the automaker is implementing an “asset-light” strategy in China because of concerns that rising political tensions between that country and the rest of the world could lead to sanctions.

“We have been seeing over the last few years more and more political interference in the world of business in China,” Carlos Tavares, Stellantis CEO, told Bloomberg. “We don’t want to be a victim of cross-sanctions as has been the case for other companies in other regions of the world recently.”

Last week, the company announced it was terminating a 12-year manufacturing partnership with state-owned . These comments from Tavares certainly give more context to that decision.

Another reason for leaving? Tavares pointed out that German and U.S.-branded vehicle sales dropped by about a fifth in China during the first half of 2022. There’s also been a double-digit drop for Japanese brands. Meanwhile, Chinese domestic companies saw sales rise in the same time period.

“We see that for Western players, selling cars in China is becoming increasingly difficult,” he told reporters. “There is an absolutely major shift in the Chinese market.”

He went on to say that Jeep’s venture into China was racking up losses, but the decision to leave was rooted in “broken trust” with Guangzhou and the Chinese Communist Party which had economic policies that heavily favored domestic automotive companies.

Tavares said GAC didn’t do what it was “supposed to do” when Stellantis signed a deal raising its stake in the joint venture that produced the Jeep , , and (a Chinese-only model).

Stellantis isn’t pulling Jeep out of China altogether;instead the company will ship an EV lineup of different Jeeps to dealers in the country.

Who Is This For?
I can’t tell you where I was when word first came out that managed to produce a book about itself that costs more than $250,000, perhaps because my eyes were so far rolled back into my head that I couldn’t see my surroundings. But I can tell you that...

The 2020 Lexus RX Finally Gets Android Auto and Not a Whole Lot Else
Updates to the 2020 and aren’t huge, but they matter to the people actually buying the cars. There’s more tech now, it should drive slightly better and it looks marginally different. The RX is already incredibly popular, so why fix something that isn’t broken, right? The biggest update is...

Traffic sucks, so why not start your morning off with some music? You provide the toast and we’ll provide the jams. In 1998, my family moved from Augsburg, Germany to Lawton, Oklahoma, and it was there that I fell in love with country music. My dad used to blast Brooks...

Cadillac’s V-series is getting two new members in the small CT4-V to replace the ATS-V and the medium -V to replace the . Both receive smaller turbocharged engines and less power than the cars they ostensibly replace, but that’s for good reason. For one thing, Cadillac seems to hint...

Where Are All the Beeps?
Where Are All the Beeps?
What is the noise that emerges from the car? This is the beeping, the toot of the other wheel that doesn’t touch the ground through tires. The honks. The toots. The hornenations. Big beeps, bouncing up to your eardrums. You see, from afar, the hand as it touches the...

What's Your Go-To Snack For a Long Road Trip?
I do a lot of driving. Enough driving that I think I’ve got a pretty good handle on eating on the road. The sad fast food offerings at every highway exit are enticing when you’re craving empty calories, but while it’s a lot of energy for not a lot...
