Last Man Standing Vintage Race Car for $40,000!
Last Man Standing Vintage Race Car for $40,000!-March 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:10:19

Do you like the look of vintage Can-Am cars? Got 40 grand to drop so you can fulfill your track fantasies? Well slip on that Nomex, cinch up your crotchbelt, and let's go racing.

Last time, fully 77% of you thought the homage Animal House Deathmobile was worth blowing that college tuition for.

For today's , we're going to see if a $40,000 MK 16 checkers your flag. Or, if that price sends you spinning into the tires on turn one.

Created by Colchester Racing Developments in the early 1960s, Merlyn was one of many cottage manufacturers building small runs of race cars throughout that decade and into the 1970s. Although they focused mainly on Formula Ford, F2 and F3 cars, they also built a series of mid-engine sport racers, starting with the MK 6 and continuing with this car.

Merlyn went out of business in 1979, but their cars live on in vintage events, and you can get your old-school Group 5 groove on with this race-ready BDD-powered MK 16. The seller claims that it's the last surviving MK 16 from a "production run" of 6. If that's not exclusive, we don't know what is.

Group 5 is a mixture of under 2-litre cars such as this, the Lotus 23, Ginettas, Bobsy SR-2s and Cooper Monacos. USRRC and Can-AM cars also fill the field, so you could be going tire-to-tire with Lola T-70s, Porsche 908s and 910s and McLaren M1s. That's some nice company to keep.

The seller states that the 220hp Cosworth BDD formula atlantic engine is new, and that the Hewland gearbox is in good shape. The car comes with both an extra nose and nose mold, so you can draft with impunity. All in all, it seems pretty well sorted out

So, does $40,000 for a rare capture your pole position? Or for that price, does it score a DNF?

You decide!

For $8,000, This 1985 Toyota Cressida Packs a Punch
Cressida is a character from the Trojan War, an event that also gave us the iconic Trojan Horse. Like that ancient trope, today's Cressida contains a surprise. You'll have to decide if its price will make it worth letting through the gates. I was a little surprised at yesterday's 's...

For $21,500, You Could Live In This 1970 Ford Bronco
The ad for today's Bronco claims it was once used for geology work. It's also got a 3 on the tree and a cool camper top, but you'll have to decide if its seller is nothing but a gold digger. The quote ' the whole is greater than the sum...

2015 Infiniti Q50S Hybrid: The Jalopnik Review
Infinitis are boring. Infinitis are for marketing VPs. Infinitis have no appeal. Infinitis are just uprated Nissans. These notions are all part of the grand public mythos of Infiniti. And all of them are false. Well, mostly. That one about Infinitis being for marketing VPs is probably true. But Infiniti...

Would You Pay CA$10,500 For This 1959 Falcon Caribbean Time Capsule?
Today's contender is an unfinished project… from the '60s! It's as idiosyncratic a throwback as Austin Powers and twice as British, but will its price prove to be groovy, baby? Over in Great Britain, they use the Pound Sterling for moolah, while here in America we tell people we don't...

Would You Pay $16,000 For This Diesel 1985 Jeep Scrambler?
The Scrambler has long been one of Jeep's more sought-after editions. Add in the Cummins diesel that has been bolted to today's contender and the only thing that you might think is left to do is to see if its price makes it worth the scramble. Yesterday's started on the...

I Have A Beetle Convertible For The Next Week
I Have A Beetle Convertible For The Next Week
I'm not especially blown away by it so far. This is a 2015 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible R-Line. It has the 2.0-liter turbo engine and the six-speed DSG. You might think it's a more fun-looking GTI with a droptop, but it's not that. I don't find it very compelling to drive,...
