Listen To The Exhaust On The New 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera S
Listen To The Exhaust On The New 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera S -February 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:09:58

If you’re in the market for a Porsche 911 right now, you can only buy one that’s turbocharged, excluding the naturally-aspirated units in the GT3 variants. So, what does a new turbo Porsche 911 sound like? I strapped a microphone to the back of a 2017 911 Carrera S while driving through twisty California backroads to find out.

(: Porsche wanted me to drive the new Carrera S so bad they gave one to me in LA with a full tank of gas, and let me drive it up to San Francisco a few days later.)

2017 Porsche 911 Carrera S - Pure Exhaust

My Miami Blue test unit had a 3.0L twin-turbo flat-six and was optioned with both the PDK transmission, and sport exhaust system. What surprised me the most about the combination of those three was the prevalence of turbocharger noise throughout the RPM range, especially at low revs during moderate acceleration. You can play with the spooling of the turbos, creating all sorts of high-pitched surges and hisses while not actually going very fast. It’s extremely satisfying.

However, at higher RPM’s under load, I was not met with the traditional high-pitched scream prevalent on cars like the and 991 GT3. Even with the sport exhaust system enabled, I longed for something a bit louder, more visceral, more Porsche. I can only guess that the exhaust is muffled ever so slightly by the turbos.

What do you think?

At $6,000, Would Buying This Stick Shift 2002 Honda Odyssey Be a Total Trip?
At $6,000, Would Buying This Stick Shift 2002 Honda Odyssey Be a Total Trip?
The second generation Honda Odyssey gained a reputation for having crap automatic transmissions. Today’s ’02 solves that problem by replacing the slusher with a stick. Could that make its price automatically appealing? Do you find certain movie tropes maddeningly frustrating? You know the ones I mean. In horror movies they...

You Can Buy the 1980 Corvette Sedan of Your Dreams (???) for a Mere $217,000
There are many ways to feel about this 1980 listed for nearly $217,000, mainly because it doesn’t look like most other Corvettes—from its time or from any other. What you see here, friends, is a Corvette with two extra doors and ample seating for four, all for about double the...

The 2019 Porsche 911 GTS Is So Good It Makes Me Hate What I've Become
We all spin fantasies about ourselves. We’re better looking than we are, smarter than we are, more morally pure than we really are. I thought I knew who I was. I would stand for the vanguard of the cheap, fun car. The secondhand Mazda Miatas of the world, the Craigslist...

At $39,500, Could This 1992 Ferrari 348Tb Prove a 'Grate' Deal?
Today’s Ferrari represents what might be considered a rare styling stumble for the venerable Italian marque. Let’s see if that, and it’s modestly rough appearance, might make stumbling into it worth its asking. There’s a lot of debate in philosophical circles as to the inherent value of being number one....

The 2019 Bentley Bentayga V8 Is the Most Opulent Way to Haul Your Stuff at 180 MPH
Obsessively detailed interiors. Shocking performance figures. Huge price tags with the weight to match. These are all things you quickly associate with Bentley. SUV? Not so much. But in 2016, Bentley tried to get in on the money-printing SUV game with the , a leather-lined and champagne-filled W12 land missile....

At $49,995, Would Buying This 1984 Audi Quattro Put You Off to a Good Start?
Today’s Audi is where it all began. This Ur-Quattro is the road-going edition of Audi’s WRC-dominating rally rocket, the racer that proved AWD was a force with which to be reckoned. Let’s see if this one’s price might be a reckoning of a different kind. So, yesterday was one of...
