A weird nickname, bright colors, big n’ littles, a nasty mailbox hood scoop, and a big engine in compact car originally built to be a fuel sipper. Yep, it must be a mid-1970s drag racing machine. This 1974 Chevrolet Vega was built do do one thing, and that was rip up the quarter mile with a gigantic engine under its tiny little hood. It doesn’t have a V8 in it right now, but you can fix that by buying it and building whatever you want to power it. Then you and the Predator can go hunting.

While cruising through Craigslist this afternoon with the key word “Project” in the search bar, I stumbled upon this delightful four-wheeled masterpiece from forty plus years ago. The most powerful Vega to leave the factory when this one was built had a massive 80 horsepower and 122 stonking foot lubs of torque. Those 140 cubic inch inline fours were poorly engineered and had myriad problems. It’s for the best that it was chucked aside in favor of an alcohol-burning big block Chebby pushing out 700 horses. That’s a pretty big difference.

The engine, of course, is not included in this car’s $10,000 price tag, but considering it’s got an NHRA-style roll cage, a tube frame front end, and all kinds of other trick bits, it’s probably worth at least that without a drivetrain at all.

My personal preference? Well of course I’m going to shove the biggest electric motor I can under that hood and pack the rear of the car full of batteries to see if I can’t take that allegedly 8.5 certifiable roll cage as a challenge instead of a guideline. Big fat EV burnouts in a car that was built to help GM survive the oil crisis. What could be more fitting?

If you want to bet it all on Vega(s), baby, go ahead and check out the Craigslist post for more photos (mostly of stuff you don’t get with the car) and contact info.

This Canadian Hero Deserves Eternal Glory For Saving So Many Classic Saabs
When I asked Félix “Why Saab?” he responded with: “I bought a 900 S when I was about 20.” “But, why Saab?”, I rebutted. Advertisement “Oh. I like these cars,” he humbly replied. Félix, like many Saab aficionados, fell in love with the entire idea of the infinitely unusual 900...

For $3,500, Could This 1985 BMW 528 Still Bring It?
The seller of today’s E28 says it’s a 528, but he leaves off the “e” part of the name. There’s a fifty-horsepower difference between the “e” and the “i” which could affect your opinion as to whether this one’s worth writing an IOU. Sporting Hondas are like the obnoxious children...

I Hit 115 MPH In A 2,700 HP Race Boat And It Was Eerily Smooth [UPDATED WITH VIDEO]
We Went 115 MPH on the Hudson River One-hundred and fifteen miles an hour in a car isn’t anything to turn your nose up at. Certainly, automakers these days tout their elite models as 200-MPH-smashing beasts, but, honestly, how many people take their cars up to those speeds anyways? One-hundred...

The Saab 900 Turbo SPG Was A Hot Hatch Way Before Hot Hatchbacks Were Cool
The may in fact be the most underrated performance hatchback in history. While most believe the Volkswagen GTI to be the grandfather of the hot hatch, truth is, while VW was still relying on a measly 1.8-liter four to generate power, Saab was dishing out fire-breathing, front-wheel-drive turbo compacts ravenous...

For $22,999, Would You Jump Out Of The Frying Pan And Into This 2011 Porsche Panamera 4?
Porsche’s new Panamera is a brutally handsome car. As today’s ’11 attests however, the first generation was far less of an aesthetic success. Of course, this one may prove far cheaper than the pretty one. Wow, the results from last Friday’s vote (remember all the way back then?) went completely...

For $16,000, Could You Get Revved Up For This 2007 Honda S2000?
A RWD Honda may seem antithetical to the marque’s ethos, but when they did do such a car—as represented by today’s S2000—they did the format right. Let’s see if this one’s price is a bit of alright too. Yesterday’s may not have been a looker, but even fewer of you...
