Manual Hatchback Prices Are Creeping Up; They're Onto Us
Manual Hatchback Prices Are Creeping Up; They're Onto Us-June 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:09:45

Enthusiasts have long since taken advantage of the fact that manual options on cars are generally cheaper than their automatic counterparts. We’d pay less money for more fun, especially if the car in question was a hatchback. It was a bulletproof deal, but now it seems that prices for these manual hatchbacks are starting to creep up. This sucks.

The first example is the , as pointed out by this excellent piece. While the base-trim starts out at a reasonable $21,000 for the sedan, you can’t actually get a manual with it. So far, the manual only comes as an option for the premium package FWD hatch, which costs $27,500.

Then there’s the 2019 , which you cannot option with a manual for the base trim anymore, apparently. If you want three pedals, you need to go with the pricier N-Line version, which costs $23,300 to start.

Then you’ve got the Civic situation:

For 2019, Honda took away the manual option in the . Now, you have to opt for the $23,170 Sport to get a 6-speed manual. Last year’s LX allowed buyers to get it for as little as $21,070, making the newer option a $2,100 step up in price.

And while we are overjoyed with the new because it comes with a manual and a starting price of , also keep in mind that the cheaper Toyota Yaris hatchback was earlier this year, making the more expensive Corolla the only choice.

What’s probably happening here is that automakers are realizing that the only people who buy the manuals are nerds like us, so they are starting to charge a premium on them in the form of killing off the option altogether on the base-trim models.

This is not to say that the end of cheap manuals is here, by the way. The cars that were listed above are very much in the affordable camp. But they’re just not as cheap as they used to be.

The 2017 Volvo V90 R-Design Lives Up To Its Looks
The 2017 Volvo V90 R-Design Lives Up To Its Looks
The R-Design is the midsize station wagon that was sent from the automotive gods to roundhouse kick generic crossovers in the chest. It brings the already-stunning to a new level by adding sexy Swedish design cues and a healthy dose of hunkered-down sports car athleticism. Volvo says its new R-Design...

For $4,500, Could This 1983 AMC Eagle Signal Your Independence From The Mundane?
Tomorrow being Independence Day here in the U.S., what better car to critique than this AMC Eagle? Let’s see if this AWD wagon’s price makes it a total star spangled winner. There was a time in the early Aughts when Volkswagen made the choice to abandon the literal meaning of...

What Do You Want To Know About The 2017 Acura NSX?
Happy almost-Independence Day. We’re celebrating with a real American supercar, the Ohio-built (and largely American-engineered) . Ask me stuff about it. We tested this car a year ago, but this is the first time your Jalopnik staff gets to spend several days living with Honda’s new supercar. It’s spending the...

For $7,477, Could This 2004 VW Touareg V10 TDI Make You The Torque Of The Town?
The crossover craze isn’t going away and if you’re going to jump on board you’ll want to do so with something interesting. Today’s Touareg is just that, but will its price prove it to be all that and a bag of chips? Pontiac used to run an ad campaign centered...

Stop Getting So Hung Up On One-Owner Cars
Stop Getting So Hung Up On One-Owner Cars
Today I spit my Lucky Charms all over my laptop screen after seeing for sale on Ebay for nearly $16,000. The seller’s reasoning for selling the Jeep at such a lofty price was a typical one: it’s a one-owner car. My thought upon reading this: why should I give a...

My Awesome Toyota MR2 Got Killed By A Prius! What Car Should I Buy?
Rob loved his Toyota MR2 and then one day a jealous Prius decided that the lovely Japanese convertible had to die. Rob’s car was hit and totaled. Now Rob is looking for something light, fun and cheap that would make for a good replacement. What car should he buy? (Welcome...
